I am a musician, and the quality of the music I listen to is very very important to me. I had been researching bookshelf speakers for months before deciding on these. In my local audio specialty store's listening room, I was able to do a side by side comparison with a pair of Def Tech AW 6500s, and the Klipsch had a much warmer, pleasant, golden tone. Nothing muddy, nothing harsh or tinny, nothing blurred. I tried them with a subwoofer and then without, and honestly the bass in the speakers alone is powerful enough. Unless you want a really enormous sound, or you're filling a party venue for many people, the bass in these is more than enough. My living room is 350 sq. ft. with 14 foot ceilings, and these handle the size just fine. They also perform quite nicely with my mid-size 1980s-era Realistic 300-watt amp.

The first test I did with these was Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man. I can hear parts and voices in the music I had never heard before. It's almost as if you can determine the placement of the instruments in the studio when they actually made the recordings. Bizarrely, these speakers give you that 3-D experience. And with vocals, you can hear the consonants so clearly! Like others before me, I am rediscovering my music collection because of these. If you shop around, you can find these for even cheaper too. I found mine for $300.

I have the Klipsch RB-81's in the family room (loved them) and recently put the RB-51's in the den where I have an XBOX-360 set up with an LED projector and screen. One can debate speakers all day but I like these because they are sensitive & crisp which means I can use a small amplifier (such as the Temple Audio Bantam Gold) that fits right in the bookcase with the speakers. Great for gaming and playing music CDs through the XBOX. When I say crisp I mean the highs are fully defined - great for my old ears that don't do highs well. I can also hear movie dialog over the, often excessive, background music/noise. I have to add that I ordered the lower priced RB-51's but got the latest RB-51 II's - not bad for a gentile, huh? Seriously, it's hard to go wrong with the Klipsch reference series and you're supporting a company right here in the heartland USA. Carry on, soldiers ....

Audiophile quality for a working man's wallet

I have the Klipsch RB-51 II bookshelf speakers set up in my medium sized office. They are paired to an Onkyo TX-8050 for a variety of music sources.

I wanted a quality set of speakers that sound excellent at a lower volume and these have more than fit the bill. These will rock a room if you want them to but for my application I was less interested in loud and more interested in sound quality.

This is my first experience with horn loaded speakers and I am very pleased. Their sound is very full and clear at any volume. The RB-51 II's highs are very crisp and clear. The mids are articulate and non-fatiguing and their low end is full without being muddy. These are superb for my 2 channel audio setup and I see absolutely no need for a subwoofer. They fill a room with music very well and I can listen to them all day long.

If I were to pick a down side to the RB-51 II's it would be the rear firing port. You will need to be mindful of this when positioning the speakers so the port does not get blocked.

All in all the Klipsch RB-51 II bookshelf speakers set the build and sound quality very high and would find themselves at home equally well in a multichannel home theater setting or a 2 channel stereo setting. Highly recommended.

I did huge research before I purchased my Klipsch RB-51's and let me tell you, they are worth every penny no matter how much you will pay for them. I had Klipsch F-3 before and unfortunately I had to sell them but I knew that I will buy something from them sooner or later, so I decided to redesign my home theater and I couldn't be happier. Although the F-3's were great in any aspect, the RB-51's have cleaner, crispier, rich sound, just amazing what you lose with any other sound systems. I have it hooked up with Denon receiver and currently using Canton Sub with it and planning to get Klipsch RW-10 Sub in the near future for the best result and look. Golden speakers look awesome, no matter where you put them. So anyway, don't think twice and just do yourself a favor and buy them if you are looking for great sound and experience.

I use these as computer speakers along with a Klipsch RW-10D subwoofer. I've read a few reviews that mentioned the addition of a subwoofer isn't necessary, but I disagree. While these speakers are great, they certainly do not have (and were not meant to have) enough low end to stand alone. Depending on what your music listening needs are, they very well may do fine by themselves, but I wouldn't be happy without the sub.

These are in a 12x12 room, which I use as an office. These speakers are just the right size; any smaller, and I'm not sure they'd sound as full as I'd like them to. Any bigger and they'd overpower my ears that are close by. I sit about three feet away from these whenever they're on, so when I say that smaller speakers wouldn't be enough, take that into consideration. In addition to being close to them, I also use them lots. I hear sounds in music I'm familiar with that I've never heard with other speakers, which is fantastic to discover.

After several months, I'm extremely happy with this purchase. I can't imagine switching to another speaker brand with how well these have performed.
