Book Description

December 1994
Originally published in 1900, this book discusses everything from the kinds of gear needed for the trek; the trails and rivers that led to the gold fields; mining methods; how to handle freight; what made a good dog team; the role and reputation of the North West Mounted Police; how to choose a cabin site; whiskey and its effects; and what to do about a runaway horse. As well, there are intriguing portraits of many of the miners and Native people involved in the story of the gold rush. Adney repeats many of the most engaging stories of the Klondike experience, always placing them in their context and inviting the reader to experience with him the various points along the line - Victoria, Skagway, Whitehorse and Yukon. "The Klondike Stampede" occupies a unique spot among books in this genre. It is one of the few first-hand descriptions of the Klondike gold rush, which began in 1896 and attracted miners and countless other fortune seekers from all over the world. Their experiences make this the most colourful period in the history of the north. The book is illustrated with photographs and drawings, done by Adney himself, and includes maps of the places and areas mentioned.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Reprinting The Klondike Stampede was a good idea as it is the most readable and informative contemporary account of the Gold Rush excitement.
– Patricia Roppel, Journal of the West

In The Klondike Stampede, Tappan Adney brings the seasoned eye of an experienced and competent journalist to the task of recording an extraordinary event ... Adney did not succumb to the tendency toward overstatement and exaggeration that is so common among the Klondike accounts. Instead, he captured, vividly and convincingly, in words and images, one of the more remarkable events of the nineteenth century.
– Dan Davidson, The Whitehorse Star

With the approach of the centenary of the Klondike gold rush, this book deserves to be widely read.
– Julie Cruikshank, BC Studies

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent details., February 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Klondike Stampede (Paperback)
I recommend first reading Pierre Berton's book about the Klondike Gold Rush to get an excellent and accurate overview of what happened.

Then read Tappan Adney's book to get lots of wonderful details about everything concerning the stampeder's life. Details such as how big his log cabin was, what was in it, how he lived, and so forth -- the interesting details of the gold rush and the stampeder's life. Also included are some of Adney's photos of the gold rush.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could Not Stop Reading, February 13, 2000
This review is from: The Klondike Stampede (Paperback)
What a great book! I am anxious to read it a second and third time. I really felt like I had been in the Klondike during the stampede after reading this book. At the very least, I now have a second hand knowledge about the experiences that the sourdoughs went through.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Klondike stampede (Paperback)
We ordered 2 of these as gifts, but returned them after deciding the print was too difficult to read and the pictures were, well, just smudges. M husband had taken a "look inside" before ordering, and thought it looked ok on line, but it is not. We have a copy of the republication of the book, and it has great pictures. Maybe if we didn't have the republished book, these reproductions would have been ok. But just can't live with these poor copies.
