Book Description

0786427876 978-0786427871 December 13, 2006
This monumental reference work is a comprehensive guide to the Ku Klux Klan. It begins with a brief history of the KKK, from antebellum predecessors to the present day. Subsequent chapters cover beliefs, including white supremacy, nativism, religion, moralism and education; terms and abbreviations, with a definitive glossary; biographies of prominent historical Klansmen and profiles of KKK groups and front groups; profiles of individuals and groups linked or friendly to the Klan; an historical overview of the Klan in politics, including friendly and adversarial politicians; a discussion of activities in the United States and abroad; the use of violence, with a roster of murder victims, a compilation of arson and bombing incidents, and sketches of riots and lynchings; state and federal efforts to police or infiltrate the Klan; watchdog groups; and current and historic journalists who covered Klan activities. Appendices provide a KKK timeline and reproductions of several key Klan documents.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A thorough expansion and reorganization of Newton's out-of-print Ku Klux Klan: An Encyclopedia (1991), this comprehensive reference is the only one of its kind in print. For Newton, author of numerous crime-related references (The FBI Encyclopedia, 2003) and books (The FBI and the KKK, 2005), this is the fourth "devoted to the KKK" and the culmination of a lifetime of research. However, readers must be prepared for its subjective tenor. The volume's 11 chapters provide more than 1,200 entries that range from a single sentence to more than a page. Entries are descriptively detailed but not analytical. A brief table of contents together with each chapter following a distinctive layout make the content unmanageable to reference without using the index. The work includes chapters detailing Klan jargon and organization, a "Who's Who in the Invisible Empire" featuring historical and contemporary biographies, a historical listing of Klans and Klan front groups, Klan political involvement, and state and worldwide Klan activity. But the real gems are the last three chapters. "Reign of Terror" covers torture and terror, bombings, murders, and lynching by the Klan. "Policing Vigilantes" presents the government's campaign to control the Klan, civil rights legislation, and prominent anti-Klan personalities and societies. "Covering the Klan" has entries for journalists and newspapers that reported on Klan activities. The title has appendixes providing a time line and selected Klan documents as well as an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources. Currently, this is the definitive reference on the KKK yet most likely of interest only to crime and KKK hobbyists. Though well written, its poor organization, journalistic tone of edgy conspiracy, and narrow scope make it a questionable academic reference. Becker, Charles

More About the Author

A California native, Michael Newton has published 215 books under his own name and various pseudonyms since 1977. He began writing professionally as a "ghost" for author Don Pendleton on the best-selling Executioner series and continues his work on that series today. With 104 episodes published to date, Newton has nearly tripled the number of Mack Bolan novels completed by creator Pendleton himself.

Newton's first book under his own name was Monsters, Mysteries and Man (1979), a survey of unexplained phenomena for younger readers. While 156 of Newton's published books have been novels--including westerns, political thrillers and psychological suspense--he is best known for nonfiction, primarily true crime and reference books.

His firearms manual for writers, Armed and Dangerous (1990), remains a best-seller for Writer's Digest Books in its 8th printing. Newton's Encyclopedia of Serial Killers (Facts on File, 2000) is currently in its second edition. His history of the Florida Ku Klux Klan, The Invisible Empire (2001), won the Florida Historical Society's 2002 Rembert Patrick Award for Best Book in Florida History. His Encyclopedia of Cryptozoology was just named as one of twelve books on the American Library Association's 2006 List of Outstanding Reference Sources. Newton's shorter work includes horror fiction, true crime articles and case histories for Court TV's Crime Library online.

He is a member of several organizations, including the Centre for Fortean Zoology, the British Columbia Scientific Cryptozoology Club and Feral Cat Friends Inc.

His 24 upcoming books, scheduled for release through 2011, include 8 novels and 16 nonfiction works. He lives in Nashville, Indiana.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced!, April 30, 2007
This review is from: The Ku Klux Klan: History, Organization, Language, Influence And Activities of America's Most Notorious Secret Society (Hardcover)
McFarland & Company, the "leading U.S. publisher of scholarly, reference and academic books" (from their website), does it again. They publish a text, from a fine writer, and anoint the book with a prohibitive "college text book" price in order to reap big bucks from sales to public libraries and university humanities departments.

Although this book takes a comprehensive look at the Klan from their beginnings to the present, the information in it can be easily obtained in many other informative commercially available, mass-marketed-priced books.
