About the Author

Mary and Bill Burnham have the knack! Seasoned car campers who have nailed down the pursuit to a science, they have coauthored many books, including the Florida Keys Paddling Atlas, winner of a 2008 National Outdoor Book Award, and Hiking Virginia (both FalconGuides) and Knack Kayaking for Everyone (forthcoming). In summer, they lead kayak tours on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, and in winter the lure of the Florida Keys draws them south.

Stephen Gorman is a photographer and writer whose photo-essay books include Northeastern Wilds and The American Wilderness. His work has also appeared in Knack Hiking & Backpacking, as well as numerous national magazines, including Outside and Audubon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great first-timer's guide, May 18, 2010
This review is from: Knack Car Camping for Everyone: A Step-by-Step Guide to Planning Your Outdoor Adventure (Knack: Make It easy) (Paperback)
I checked this book out from the library, as I was not comfortable buying a book with no reviews. After reading halfway through it, I think it's an excellect first-timer's guide.

The book is printed on a high quality paper, with quality photographs taking approximately 60% of each page. It's really more of a step-by-step guide, rather than a typical camping book.

The guide contains pretty much all of the basic info you will need to get started, but you will need to supplement it with more detailed books, should you want to get into more "serious" camping. The authors are very knowledgable about all of the latest gear, but are careful to emphasize that it's not neccessary to spend a fortune to enjoy camping with your family.

Overall, the book provides clear, organized information, that is sufficient to get someone who has never been camping started.

This review is from: Knack Car Camping for Everyone: A Step-by-Step Guide to Planning Your Outdoor Adventure (Knack: Make It easy) (Paperback)
I grew up camping just about every weekend but most of my camping trips as an adult consisted of one night, float trip camps with large groups of people. We bought this to help us plan for a week-long road trip/car camping to the Grand Canyon and back and found it VERY helpful. The authors organized the info very well and are realistic about people's dedication. They give lots of options for every situation like the hiker, the family with children, camping with pets, deserts/beaches/snow etc. Mainly, it really helped me on the buying/packing/organization part. We were setting up/tearing down camp everyday with a full day of driving in between so being able to find everything quickly really helped. I feel like our trip definitely benefited from using the info in this book. The only negative I have to say is that it took forever to arrive. I actually forgot I had ordered it until it arrived one day but since it was months ahead of the trip it wasn't an issue for me.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book has taken it's place as my favorite of three I have purchased on the subject. It has been 20 years or so since I have been camping, and a little refreshing couldn't hurt. This book was fun and informative, No regrets on the purchase.
