5.0 out of 5 stars NOT MY USUAL READ...
But when I finally got around to picking it up and dusting it off -I couldn't put it down! What a delightful, witty, tragic, and down-to-earth telling of this woman's life! The tale was not at all what I expected it to be, and I've recommended this book highly to my friends (much to their suprise, considering what I usually read!). I loved the book, and I'm sure I'll...

1.0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Dull
I was absolutely blown away at how DULL this book was. Brett Butler is my favorite comedian of all time. I love her stand-up act and her television show. I guess I was fooled into thinking her witty humor would translate into her book. The story itself begins with how her grandparents met, and very slowly progresses with the occasional misplaced flash back or flash...

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!, May 6, 2000

Not the usual glitzy Hollywood bio! Sincere and honest with a depth that goes past the usual rags to riches story. A real triumph! Love the irreverent but accurate retelling of "Southern Manners". If you are from the South you'll appreciate it! I only wish I could know more of what happened to Brett after the pages of the book were written.

5.0 out of 5 stars big words don't scare me, December 3, 2006
This review is from: Knee Deep in Paradise (Hardcover)
The previous reviewer that felt Brett used words in a pretentious fashion should stick to Nancy Drew. I found the biography enlightening as to the character and strife that molded a fine comedian.I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised that she has such a versatile grasp of the English language. I read biographies for insight and that is what you get with Ms. Butler. It is not the more common joke fest that many other comic Bios proffer.
A good read and an interesting person. Thanks for your memories Brett.

5.0 out of 5 stars I want a sequel!, August 14, 2005

This review is from: Knee Deep in Paradise (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was interesting to look back on old reruns of "Grace Under Fire" after reading this book and see how pieces of Brett Butler's life were incorporated into the show. It is the best book I've read in a long time. I want a sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly touching, a MUST READ, May 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Knee Deep in Paradise (Hardcover)
I don't think I've ever been as happy to have picked up a random book from the bookstore as I was when I ended up reading "Knee Deep in Paradise" by Brett Butler. This must be one of the most sincere books I've ever read, absolutely honest in a way that you would never expect anybody to write their autobiography, especially someone as well-known as B.B. I'm impressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST read for all Butler's fans!!! ;-), May 13, 1998

This review is from: Knee Deep in Paradise (Hardcover)
Brett Butler's "Knee Deep in Paradise" is a book for everyone to read. She tells, not only abuot her live as a star, but of her hard life while growing up. This book opens your eyes to things that battered women all over the world hide... the fact that they feel helpless and destoryed by what is happening to them. Butler's life could not have gotten any worse when her husband pulls a gun on her and she feels the bullet pass by her ear. Then, just to assure herself that she wasn't hit, she searches the wall of the hotel for a bullet hole. This book is a must read for anyone who is a fan of "Grace Under Fire" or Brett Butler's comedy

I used to own this book, but moved about half way done with reading it and could not find it again after the move. It has been years now since that move. I thought about looking for the book on Amazon and was flabbergasted that it was for sale, I ordered it and it arrived in the condition stated... I am very happy to have this book back in my library. I will be rereading it as soon as I finish the book I am in now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprising!, June 9, 2008
This review is from: Knee Deep in Paradise (Paperback)
I love Brett Butler's stand up, I adored her show, and I always knew she was a smart lady. But, wow, I had no idea she was brilliant. Her style is amazing, and her voice is, well, again, brilliant. She writes her life story with an honesty that draws you in, and her words can at times leave you speechless. You may look at her and write her off as just some southern stand up comic or recovering alcoholic... But if you read her book, it definitely has the power to show you that assumptions can be, and often are, dead wrong.

I wish this book had gotten the acclaim it deserves.

And I wish it was still in print, as someone has stolen my copy.

4.0 out of 5 stars WELL WRITTEN, March 17, 2007

Brett Butler is a real writer, and I didn't for a second view this autobio as pretentious. She has a decent vocabulary, and I see nothing wrong with her using it. I did, however, lose interest towards the end. The whole thing about coming to terms with her relationship with her father was dragged out, and the book became a biography of him. I was disappointed at so little about the TV show. Perhaps, as others suggest, we need a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars When is her next book coming out, August 1, 2002
I have followed Brett Butler since i discovered the sitcom Grace Under Fire. Being in a relationship with a southern belle and being Australian myself.. i can relate totally to most of the things Brett has written about with regards to the southern ways and southern manners. The woman in my view rocks !! .... Instead of crying into her mint tea, she writes a no holds barred, except for diplomatic reasons, story of where she came from , who she was, is and has become. Nothing is glossed over.It is real. She in my view has remained grounded even after all she has encountered in her life. Brett, keep writing, you can only get better. This reader wishes you had another book written as an aftermath for this one. Where are you now ? WHat is your life like now... have you remained "clean" from the demon drugs & drink and where are you going .....PS : are you single and dating ...
