2.0 out of 5 stars getting there, but no panacea
In its favour: easy and safe setting, and very easy corpse removal, with no need to touch the dead mouse.
Against: cheap materials- which means that the trigger breaks after maybe 3 snaps.

Eleven years in a bungalow 80-plus years old, and we've never had a pest problem, until my son developed the bad habit of letting the back door hang wide open. Hey, presto--next thing we knew, there was a mouse in the house. It took quite a while to get it with an old-school trap, but we finally did; little did we realize that, in the meantime, there had been pups. We didn't know how many, but could hear them rustling and gnawing in the dark every night.

Squeamish after the horrow of the first kill and the tiny corpse that was left behind--and knowing that the ones left behind were the offspring--I insisted upon no-kill traps. What a joke those turned out to be. If we walked with a heavy tread or closed a door firmly, the trap doors swung shut and were rendered useless. It was not a very merry Christmas or a happy new year, as we held our breath that no renegade rodent would zip through the dining room or living room in front of guests.

I found the Snap-E traps here on Amazon, and was mightily impressed that 18 people out of 18 raved about them. In my office, it's hard to get a simple-majority agreement out of 5 or 6 people; a unanimous benediction from 18 people seemed nothing short of miraculous.

I ordered two Snap-E traps and waited as patiently as possible for them to arrive over the long holiday weekend.

Boy, were they worth the wait! Let me reaffirm that I am NOT pleased to have little killing machines in my house; however, I did try the no-kill variety and was mightily disappointed. Within 24 hours of setting the Snap-E traps, two mice were dispatched. Fifteen hours later, we got a third.

There's at least one more running about, as the trap had been licked clean of peanut butter, despite the dead mouse under the bar (eeeeew!).

I have learned the hard way that these aren't cute little critters that are going to go away by themselves--they're nasty little vermin that are only going to leave the house when they're wrapped up in grocery bags and put in the trash. I am sad to admit that I'm going to have to work off the bad karma some other way, but so happy to be regaining my home, and so quickly, too!

And so, let me be the 19th person to sing the praises of the Snap-E traps. I hope we never need to use them again, but we're going to keep a couple around, just in case. And if a tiny visitor should ever happen to disrupt your household, don't mess around--just get these traps and take care of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This trap's a snap, September 17, 2007

Apologies to all my friends
who love their rats and mice
I had a critter in my house
that wasn't cute or nice

All day he'd nap, but as night fell
he'd venture out to snack
He loved my chocolates, and my bread
and Pringles by the stack

The straw that broke the camel's back
was when he chewed a hole
right through my bag of garlic toast
and all the garlic stole

I tried a sturdy wooden trap
he laughed and took my cheese
I set a bunch of sticky ones
he passed them by with ease

And then I came to Amazon
(there's so much that they sell)
I found this cheap and simple trap
that works so very well

The bait goes in the little hole
and then just set the trap
Relax and have a glass of wine
And wait to hear the snap

The final step's the easiest
Just lift the latch and dump
You'll never, ever touch again
a mouse's furry rump

We first found this model of mousetrap by accident a couple of years ago. It happened to be stocked at the local hardware store when we needed traps. This review reflects experience since that first purchase. Our mice seem to be on IQ boosters. Standard wooden traps are robbed without exception. Jaw traps are ignored. Electronic traps have yet to catch a single rodent. Live traps remain empty. We have had Snap-E traps robbed as well, but the theft frequency is very low. Once caught, the mouse is easily disposed, and there is no need for direct hand contact with the remains. The trap is easily cleaned. The trap is easy to bait and set. When we recently decided that more traps were needed and then discovered that they were no longer locally available, we were very happy to find them here on Amazon.

Do not hesitate one more second if you are infested with vermin - buy this trap NOW. A couple of weeks ago we discovered unwelcome mice in the house following torrential rains and flooding.

First, we tried the Victor traps with only limited success - one mouse in 5 days with the peanut butter bait stripped from the other traps. Then, on the advice of the hardware store folks, the sticky traps - mice escaped. Finally, I decided to search Amazon (thank you Amazon) for mouse traps and came across this wonderful product.

I'd never heard of the Snap-E trap and probably never would have had I not come to Amazon. It is as close to perfection as you can possibly imagine - easy to bait, easy to set, easy to get rid of the dead mouse and then easy to set again. I will make a bold prediction - in my lifetime, there will not be a better mouse trap. It simply is not possible to improve on this design.

The first night we caught 4 mice! I've no doubt whatsoever that these traps will rid us of our problem once and for all as quickly as the four traps I purchased can kill the little rascals.

Say good bye to Victor for good. Buy this product and you will never look back.

Update: These traps just keep on working with ruthless efficiency. It almost seems unfair. The vermin just don't stand a chance. My next project - tackle the moles in the yard.

Further update: Absolutely no evidence of vermin whatsoever. The problem has been eliminated. I'll keep the traps out in the attic and in the unfinished basement. Trust me: you'll not find a better mousetrap anywhere for any amount of money. Simply an amazing device.

I had this very mousetrap in Logansport, IN for six years in a house rental and it served me well. I was renting an old stone house by a wooded area with a field next door. Not to mention, I'm lazy when it comes to mowing the lawn, so it often became a field mouse paradise especially late in the year. I typically stop mowing in September waiting for winter. That means the mice are gonna come my way to get out of the cold and go crumb hunting or carpet chewing in my house!

I could hear the little sneaks in the evening when in bed. Knawing on the carpet edges, or some box they chewed into of my food. I wanted them out. I noticed down in the half basement they liked the smell of salt near the top of the water softener. I could tell by the dropings. I bought one of these mouse traps, and baited it with Andes mint chocolate. Mice appear to love the stuff. I jamed it into the little hole and set the trap near the salt smell. It wasn't a half hour later I got one, and scored three on the day!

Over the next few years every time it got cold the mice would sneak in the house and I'd clean them out with the trap. It usually managed to get them all, one year I got over 30. A huge accomplishment for one little trap, at the time I've never bought a second. The beauty of the thing is that it's easy to set using the second bar, and easy to release the dead critter. A hungry cat lived nearby, so I would fling them over the fence by pulling on the second, no-touch mouse bar, and kitty would finish them off.

I moved into a "new" (new to me anyway, built in 1955) house a little over a year ago in Fort Wayne, IN. I noticed the past owner left out mouse poisons in several areas. I couldn't have them around because my little dog Sandy would probably eat them if he found any. I searched the web for this type of mouse trap, and lucky found the same one I used nearly 15 years ago in Logansport. I bought two for me this time, and two for a friend, and it took only one day to clear out all five mice in my house. My friend said his apartment was clean in just a few days. I still baited with chocolate, he used cheese, but I think mice prefer the Andes mint chocolate bars better!

4.0 out of 5 stars I think the cover is worth $1.29, March 16, 2008

So just FYI, this is the same mechanism as in the D-CON covered mousetrap (sometimes called the "ultra set"). The D-CON version just has a plastic cover with an entryway. The setting pull bar goes outside the cover. For the cover you may be charged an additional $1.29 or so.

This makes it more expensive, but it might well be worth it. Certainly if you have pets, you would want the cover. A dog's sniffer won't set off the covered version. There are also advantages if you need to set some traps in a chaotic location like a kitchen where things might fall over and set off the uncovered version. Courtland J. Carpenter suggests using chocolate as bait (see his review) but this seems overly ghoulish to me, I'm not sure why. Let's try to keep chocolate, pest infestations and death all separate, okay Courtland?

Anyway, the main reason for the cover is for the squeamish--you don't see much of the dead mouse until you drop it in the trash. I got the covered version because my lady friend was on the less murderous side of personality types, and I didn't think she could deal with an uncovered trap. But guess what? She still needed me to do it. So that $1.29 didn't get me out of "bring out your dead" duty.

At first, I was pretty happy to do it--I felt like a hero, like St. George, slaying the dragon. But one day, emptying the trap by pulling up on the cover, I had a fellow-feeling with the mouse. Something about the cover on the D-CON version makes you feel like it's HIS house, like a dog-house. And it seemed that actually domesticity was the real trap, and I couldn't figure out why we were enemies. So if you don't have pets, you might find this uncovered version more conducive to your peace of mind. [37]

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Snap Mouse Trap, November 2, 2006

I've lived out in the "sticks" as well as in the city of Philadelphia and this snap mouse trap is the best. There are different categories for mice catching and this trap is best snap trap by far.

There are:

Snap traps (dead mouse)
Electronic traps (dead mouse)
Glue traps (live but very upset mouse)
Poison (dying mouse running around the house)

Live catch traps (live mouse ready to be set free)

Anyhow, back to this trap- I've used the wooden traps and even the live catch door traps but this one works the best.

Some mice can figure out the wooden traps and either set them off without being caught, or take the bait without setting the trap off at all.

Not with this trap!

I have not had a miss fire or bait stolen in over 2 dozen catches.

This trap in combination with tootsie roll bait has been extremely effective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, February 11, 2011

I live in a 200-year-old refurbished historic building that had been abandoned for decades. When the developers converted it into modern housing, they slapped up some interior plywood without much fanfare. Accordingly, I have seen more mice in my yearlong tenure here than many people see in a lifetime. And by see, I mean they just hang out like they're the ones paying rent. They are relentless and their survival instincts are sharp, honed by prior generations' succumbing to extermination tactics that are now rendered ineffective.

For a while I felt bad about killing them, so I used glue pads to catch them. Then I'd take them outside with a Q-tip and baby oil to pry them free and set them loose. That got old fast. I grew to resent their scratching in the walls at night, their casual strolls in tandem across the kitchen. So I moved to poison. To the sound-emission devices. To the other snapping traps. Nothing worked. I couldn't get rid of them to save my life, despite spending what felt like my life savings on traps. They were smart! They could get take cheese out of a trap without triggering the bar! (Meanwhile I'd snap my thumb just setting the thing). Things felt hopeless.

Then, I bought three of these Snap-E Mouse Traps and placed them strategically. Within hours, BOOM. Three mice caught. I refilled, replaced. BOOM. Three more. The mouse genocide continued. It was amazing. After about a week, I noticed that I wasn't hearing or seeing the mice anymore. The traps remained empty. I had gotten them all, or at least scared them out of my particular apartment. It was the best feeling I've ever had, and I have this product to thank. The traps are reusable and sturdy, which means they're a pretty solid bargain. They are sensitive to their targets, so you won't deal with losing all of your bait. And furthermore, they are strong. I once found two dead mice in a single trap!

If you're suffering from a mouse problem and have tried other options, try this one next. It will be your last stop on the road to freedom from pests.

Trap is easy enough to set when new. However if used in a garage or outside where trap is exposed to abrasive dirt or sand, the trigger mechanism will fail in short order. This results in trap being difficult to set, or when set trap will not trip when treadle is pressed.
