Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Departing from her Alison Kaine series, Allen creates a new heroine who sleuths by default. Marta Goicochea, a woman of Basque heritage, sells advice via Denver's psychic hotlines and flea-market booths. For the past six months, though, she's been severely depressed about the breakup of her last love affair. After her best friend tricks her into attending group therapy, Marta meets a woman who is soon to be accused of murder. The woman asks Marta to help locate a possibly crucial witness. Intensely written prose, lesbian and other social issues, and a dry sense of humor make this a good choice for appropriate collections.

Review

I Knew You Would Call features Marta Goicochera, a Basque-American phone psychic and her outrageous butch cousin Mary Clare. Their friend Polly is arrested for murder and Marta uses her psychic insights to discover the truth. Author Kate Allen's novels have the ability to capture the current controversies in the lesbian community and describe them with insight and humor. In this one she tackles the issues of incest survival, abusive lesbian relationships, and child custody. I Knew You Would Call is complex, funny, powerfully written, and more realistic than most mysteries, lesbian or otherwise. --Midwest Book Review

This review is from: I Knew You Would Call: A Marta Goicochea Mystery (Paperback)
I met Kate Allen at the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival. I bought all the books which were available and had her autograph them. I read them by year of copyright. This was the first. I love Kate's writing. Excellent plot construction and character development. This particular one I had problems staying with. It had too many minor subplots going on. I still love a good mystery.
