While these Lincoln Logs are great... and they are wooden..., if you were a kid in the 70s you'd remember that there were 4 notches on the longest stick on which to build great big log cabins and forts, etc. These came with some new adaptations, of which most were acceptable, however, the longest stick was the 3 notched log and so... the saga of putting together incredible log structures has diminished to that of smaller less creative imagination creations. Don't get me wrong, it still is almost all that a collectors edition ought to be sans the 4 notch and the multitude of ideas/ directions for building the structures is missing. Kind of like buying the "little" 1 vehicle model of Legos instead of the "whole kit" version. Fun... just not quite the same!

I haven't even opened the bags holding the wooden logs yet, so won't comment on them. There are definitely fewer of them than the set I had as a child.
The other reviewer who commented on the toxic smell was right - it's potent. Luckily I was buying for myself, not a child. I once bought a mahjong box imported from China with the same smell...2 years later, it hasn't gone away. The tin is thin and cheap. My childhood set (from the '70s) came in a cardboard tube with a plastic top, and it was infinitely more sturdy than this "collectible" tin. In addition, the top was held on with clear tape that left a thick sticky residue when I removed it. I once bought a popcorn tin at a dollar store that suffered from the same problem.... I didn't expect it with this tin, for $30+. Sad. And I have to add $3 to the price I paid for the tin just for the naphtha I used trying to remove the residue! I also had to be extremely careful, so as not to bend the cheapo tin or its lid. On the plus side, the logs seem to be better stained than the set I had as a kid - darker and more uniform, especially the green ones. Of course, as I said, I haven't actually opened the bags yet.

When my adult son told me he thought this was the best present he ever received - I decided to get a set for the grandchildren. I guess they were
"as advertised", but not great by a long shot. There are flaws in the specs, and only enough to make one building at a time anyway. I guess I should have known it couldn't be the same....

Spend your money on something else. This is a 100pcs set with 56 of them 1" long with one notch. I think we would have to buy 6 of the sets and toss out most of the pcs to make something useful or even close to what we remember Lincoln logs to be.

Disappointed. Only a minimal amount of pieces for the high price.,
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars
I was very disappointed. This big, beautiful fancy metal container contains 100 pieces, as advertised (however, container is only half-full). I was disappointed to find that it did not have an adequate amount of building pieces to be very creative. Sure, a person can build the cabin on the box photo, but not much more. The Lincoln Log toys from years ago had far more building logs and roof pieces. One can only be so creative with this pricey kit. Until the company puts more building pieces inside (at a more economical price), I will be looking for Lincoln Logs at garage sales.

Overall, this is a pretty good set of Lincoln Logs, but as usual with sets of building toys, there aren't nearly enough in one set to really do much with. I am disappointed in the sizes of the pieces. There are tons of small ones and not enough medium or long ones. You can only build one roof with one chimney at a time.
I did not notice any toxic smell, however, so I was happy about that. Our kids will have fun with these, but we'll probably have to buy more to make them worth it.

The children were excited to get this as a Christmas present from grandma. Unfortunately when we opened it, it let out toxic fumes that would knock out a horse! IF YOU GET THIS, OPEN IT OUTSIDE and let it air out for a while.
Inspecting the back, I see that it was made in China. So can I even let my children play with it? God only knows how much lead it is tainted with. What if the little ones put it in their mouths? Too bad China has a monopoly on toys and everyone is either ignorant or ambivalent about it.

We were very glad to find the classic edition of Lincoln Logs that was similar to the ones my husband & I grew up playing with as children in the 70s. It was frustrating to go to local toy & big box stores only see "special edition" sets that were too prescriptive for our tastes. These sets are imaginatively more limiting and specified the type of/construction of buildings (the fort, trading post, mail express, etc.) We like that our son has the opportunity to build something new everyday, sometimes several times a day, without being boxed in by the picture on the container showing what the building "should" look like. Bravo for having this classic set available--hopefully it will always be available to help future generations also express their individual artistic and creative personalities. Tired of reading how children today have shorter attention spans and lack imagination? Take away the video & online games, give them these Lincoln Logs, stand back and watch the wonder.

My grandparents had a huge bucket of these when I was little. My brother, sister, cousins and I LOVED playing with Lincoln Logs. I wanted to share that joy with my two sons. This is a decent set. The pieces aren't as high quality as the ones I played with as a kid, but overall they're good. I will probably purchase another set or two because there aren't enough pieces in this for both my boys to build anything decent-sized at the same time.
My one big concern with these is the AWFUL smell they had when first opened. My boys refused to play with them at first because they were "stinky". I laid the pieces out on my front porch for several days to air out and the odor finally dissipated. (Although when the pieces are close to your face you can still smell it.) Overall, lots of fun.

I highly recommend this traditional toy that teaches children patience and three dimensional concepts. My three year old nephew loves to spend time with his new toy. Lincoln Logs is a quality toy for little boys-great for a birthday or Christmas gift!
