not as toddler friendly as his classic wheels on the bus,

This IS a beautiful book like all of his books, but while I love it, I can't let my 2 year old read and handle it with me. Now, my son CAN handle and work all of the various flaps and tabs on the Wheels on the bus book, and has been doing that since 10 months. These are just too tiny and somewhat delicate for daily handling like well loved books should have. I have to admit that I do have tape on my second copy of wheels on the bus, but that book did not attempt to fall apart at the very beginning.ITs a gorgeous book with stunning effects and illustrations so go ahead and buy it!

A Work Of Art,
By TJ's Mommy (El Dorado Hills, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Knick Knack Paddywhack (New York Times Best Illustrated Books (Awards)) (Hardcover)
I bought this book based on reviews on this site of the author, Paul O. Zelinsky. I wasn't sure if it was age appropriate for my son (17 months), but he loves books and I just decided to give it a go. My husband and I opened it while our son was sleeping and we just LOVED it. The drawings are amazing and the engineering of the tab movement is unbelivevable. It had us in awe for 10 or 20 minutes. The book might not be kid friendly, but if you can hold your child for a few minutes and show them the movement of the pictures and read the story it will be great.

My preschool special ed students LOVE this book, they would read it 10 times each day if I allowed them to. It's fun, had wonderful pop-ups and pull tabs and reinforces beginning reading skills such as rhyming. A must for children who need encouragement to listen to stories.

Fabulous animation; delicate mechanisms,

This book is a marvel of paper engineering. After my daughter fell in love with Zelinsky's wonderful "Wheels on the Bus", we had to get her this one. She adores it, and will choose it most of the time we ask her to get a book. However, unlike "Wheels", the mechanisms are too delicate for a toddler. This morning she yanked on one of the tabs, and although nothing tore, one of the little men will no longer go back into his hiding place. The damage appears permanent.
Highly recommended either for slightly older children or those who will be content to let their parents pull all the tabs for them.

The tabs are sooo hard to pull on some of the pages!! They do NOT slide in and out easily. As far as the tabs go, that is a huge disappointment after having The Wheels on the Bus.
However, 4 starts for content! My 2 year old loves this book!! We read it over and over.. Another clear favourite! I love the author's/illustrator's take on the 'old men' ROLLING home. My son loves the dog pushing the wheel chair. Make the tabs easier to manipulate and this would be a 5 star, must have book.

Buy one for yourself,

This is far and away the best movable I have ever seen. The attention to detail and the unbelievable quality of the book is amazing. There is a new something I see everytime I open the book. Wait until you read it through a few times and you find a new detail or creative way for the movement to happen. My daughter and I love this book so much I am buying another one to put away for her child.

I agree with other reviewers that the pulls are a little stiff on this book, but i just slip a finger in the page while a pull and they all go easily. Not a big deal to me at all. I cannot let my 10 month old play with this book like she does many of her others, but I knew that from the start. She finds it mesmerizing though and I have a feeling that we will get years of use out of this one!!

Always something new,
This review is from: Knick Knack Paddywhack (New York Times Best Illustrated Books (Awards)) (Hardcover)
My three year old son loves this book and we read it every night. He is constantly finding new things to open, close, move, etc. After about 2 months of constant use, one of the tabs finally broke, which is much better than other lift/move books he has. Highly recommend this book!

Good popups, but strange storyline for kids,

I like the interactivity of the book and the variety of popups/sliders, but the storyline is so strange. I think there are a lot of other popup books with more appropriate story lines. I guess to each his own. It's very well done technically; I just can't recommend it for kids.

I have this and Wheels on the Bus, and my 1-year-old and I love both of them. This one, especially, has THE coolest moving parts and illustrations. It is so elaborate and fun! Each verse is interpreted in a different way, especially the "give the dog a bone/rolling home" parts. It's awesome! I have to keep my baby from grabbing it too much, but he loves it. Also, check out Wheels on the Bus. Its moving parts are flatter and easier to protect from younger babies.
