Editorial Reviews

2011 release from the Phoenix-based Indie/Alt-Rock duo. Knife Man is a record about love, poverty, violence, luck, discrimination, homelessness, and Phoenix, Arizona. Recorded by their longtime engineer Jalipaz at Audioconfusion, AJJ formed an Arizona all-star band, borrowing members from ROAR, Doth, French Quarter, and Malakai. The Knife Man sessions have yielded Andrew Jackson Jihad's most cohesive and driving album yet.

This is one of the best albums of 2011 (perhaps the best). It's lyrically phenomenal and romps gleefully through a field full of social taboo and usually unspoken thoughts/words, skipping and laughing at the pain, joy, and absurdity of it all the whole way. It's thoughtful and succinct street art for the ears and everything in between. Few first listens turn me on like this one did (I laughed out loud throughout) and I don't see myself pulling it from rotation anytime soon. A must hear... buy and support the artist.

Great album, loved it on Vinyl, sounds more warm and hi-fi than the CD. I would recommend over the CD version.

There are a lot of indie bands out there, all producing unique and different music from what's usually presented in the mainstream. Now, I don't mean to imply the mainstream isn't good or not worth it, it's just exploring the indie scene can be a very refreshing and rewarding experience, specially because these bands often present usually untouched and unusually elaborated on topics.
Such is the case with Andrew Jackson Jihad, a varying band led often by Sean Bonnette. Their unique sound could have a hard time becoming "popular," but the messages behind each song alone make AJJ's music exciting and reflexive.
AJJ aims to crudely present human condition and social issues in the raw of emotion, producing songs filled with empathy, love and fear of oneself all at the same time. They explicitly display problematic topics, like male empowerment in their song "American Tune," and exhibit their more prominent issues, starting an introspective process on the listener.
I believe one can learn a lot by listening to AJJ and I'd think if more people listened to them with an open mind they would certainly be amazed.

This is another great cd from AJJ. Once again, definitely worth the $9 to support an awesome artist!!! I'd buy this twice if I could.

You will love this album! Unless you are my girlfriend. Because she hates it. I don't know why. She hates all folk punk though, so her opinion obviously isn't worth a thing. Well I guess that means her opinion on my hair doesn't matter either! No Julie! I'm not balding! And I'm not going to shave my head to hide that my hair is thinning! And I don't care that it makes me look like Bill Murray! My mother doesn't seem to mind! She says I look handsome! You've always hated my mother! And you always hated me and my stupid hair!
Yes I am going to my mother's for the night!
Is that going to be a problem!?
WELL GOOD!!!!!

Great album. 5 Stars.

Hilarious, and at the same time meaningful, assaults on events in everyday life, presented in a manner that isn't at all pretentious. Just honest. You're not going to find crisp sound or innovative musicianship here, but it's for the better that there aren't any of that. The staunch lack of professionalism is, after all, what makes this album, and this band, shine.
