The list author says: "Rake knitting, knitting board, frame knitting, Amish loom, hat loom, Knifty Knitter, knitting loom, circle loom: whatever you call it, here are some things to help make your craft better.
You can make a hat using these looms. But you can also make sweaters, scarves, mittens, shawls, shrugs, gloves, socks, afghans, belts, toys and pillows.
I use baby, sock and fingering yarn for finer guage looms and use sport, dk and bulky weight for large guage looms, such as knifty knitter. Fur and novelty yarns work well, also.
Looms come in extra fine guage, large guage and everything in between; whether the pegs are nylon, wood or metal, there's one out there for you to love.
There are round looms, long looms, figure-eight style infinity looms, afghan looms, hat, sock, mitten looms.
If you can crochet, you can do this. For many people with arthritis or hand/arm problems, this seems to be easier than 2 needle knitting. This craft also travels well.
Makers of looms I know and like are decor accents, red oak creations, knifty knitter by provo craft, the authentic knitting board, in the attic looms, the pocket knitter by caron/bond, and of course, all those plastic and wood childhood spool knitters aka knitting jenny looms we all had and loved.
"The first ones I saw when they exploded back onto the scene a few years ago, they're not the only ones out there. But these are great to start with, as the larger guage makes it easier to wrap the pegs and see what you're doing. Kids love them, too."
"Use the easiest stitch, the e-wrap, one strand over one strand and voila! In no time, you can make a washable, wearable, soft wool hat. Don't wrap too tightly, you want it soft, full and fuzzy. Works up fast and thick, for a quick-knit gift. They have great colors in the stores. Perfect for a beginner loom knitter to use."
"I use this on the go, when I need to use two yarns, holding 2 strands together as I knit. The hole on the lid lets it feed out at a fairly even tension, if your yarn is balled vs skeined. You can put the handle over your wrist and knit as a passenger in a car. They have different sizes; Its In The Bag makes clear plastic zippered bags that are similar."
"Try this reasonably priced smaller guage loom set. Once you have, you'll want to move up to handcrafted wood, or will want to try even finer guage looms. Then, pass these on to kids, grandkids or friends. Or keep them to use with chunky, handspun yarns."
"This makes a huggably soft, washable baby hat on the knifty knitter looms. You only need one strand. Comes in great colors elsewhere, such as in stores at Joannes or Michaels. And don't forget to try online retailers like Knit Picks and Knitting Warehouse or Herrschners for your yarns too."
"If you like loom knitting, you might like this. It's the same 8 mm guage as the USM OR ISM knitting machine/ sweater machine. Make an ipod holder or cell phone cozy, or scarf. Or make i-cord to use on a loom-made hat. It works like a knitting rake. You just wrap the fins (pegs)and lift off the yarn and voila! You're knitting."
