Book Description

Ravenloft December 1, 1991
On the fabled world of Krynn, Lord Soth finally learns that there is a price to pay for his long history of evil deeds, a price even an undead warrior might find horrifying.

Dark powers transport Soth to Barovia, and there the death knight must face the dread minions of Count Strahn Von Zarovich, the vampire lord of the nightmare land. But with only a captive Vistani woman and an untrustworthy ghost for allies, Lord Soth soon discovers that he may have to join forces with the powerful vampire if he is ever to escape the realm of terror.

Knight of the Black Rose is the second in an open-ended series of Gothic horror tales dealing with the masters and monsters of the Ravenloft dark fantasy setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best fantasy horror book I've read... really!, January 6, 2004

Smee (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Knight of the Black Rose (Ravenloft Terror of Lord Soth, Vol. 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have only read a couple other fantasy horror books but NOTHING like this one. I would have to say that this is a start of a new bookcase for me. If your interested in anything related to D&D, magic, or death (lol) you will absolutely love the Ravenloft series. The story is fantastic, it never slows down. It is seamless and easy to follow. I felt like I acctually knew the charicters by the end of the book(thats how good the charicter development is!). And the way Lowder(the writer) describes all of the spells and the way everyone looks and sometimes just the absolute terror written on someones face... oh man you feel like you're there! well this is a fantastic book with many others before and after it. (if your trying to read the whole serise in order good luck!) I greatly recomend this book to ALL people who are interested in this topic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Evil vs. evil, and the devil take the hindmost, April 4, 2001
This review is from: Knight of the Black Rose (Ravenloft Terror of Lord Soth, Vol. 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
Lord Soth, the Knight of the Black Rose, is a man cursed by the gods. Doomed to an eternity of undead existence, he seeks to ameliorate his condition by making his true love undead like himself. All his plans come to naught though, when he finds himself transported to another plane of existence, one dominated by creatures as evil and powerful as himself. Driven to return to his world, Krynn, he must outfight the evil around him.

I must admit that I have never read any of the Dragonlance or Ravenloft books before, but the cover of this book caught my eye. This book's story of evil versus evil is refreshingly different from any other book I have ever written. Also, the book's presentation of Soth's descent into his fallen state was quite fascinating. Overall, I found this a very good book, one that I recommend highly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good - Not Great, but Good, April 5, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Knight of the Black Rose (Ravenloft Terror of Lord Soth, Vol. 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
This was my first Ravenloft novel, and, while not great, it was good enough to make me go out and buy the first book in the series, Vampire of the Mists. I especially appreciate Jim Lowder taking the time to go back to study Test of the Twins for the prologue and various other parts of the book - probably a lot of other authors wouldn't have taken the time, and would have ended screwing something up. It's not quite the Lord Soth I remember from DragonLance, though. He seems to caring for a death knight who went through so much pain and suffering in the first two DragonLance trilogies (which serve as an excellent prologue to this book and which I Highly recommend)! A few minor contradictions, but overall well written. -Embe
