5.0 out of 5 stars The best fantasy horror book I've read... really!
I have only read a couple other fantasy horror books but NOTHING like this one. I would have to say that this is a start of a new bookcase for me. If your interested in anything related to D&D, magic, or death (lol) you will absolutely love the Ravenloft series. The story is fantastic, it never slows down. It is seamless and easy to follow. 3.0 out of 5 stars A Long Time Ago
I got this book in the 90s and back then for me Dungeons & Dragons was a guilty pleasure. This kinda creepy book deals with the death knight Lord Soth. A death knight is a powerful undead featured in the Fiend Folio and Monstrous Manuel. Could be taken out one on one if you're powerful enough. Back then i wanted to be one with the darkness. I felt like I acctually knew the charicters by the end of the book(thats how good the charicter development is!). And the way Lowder(the writer) describes all of the spells and the way everyone looks and sometimes just the absolute terror written on someones face... oh man you feel like you're there! well this is a fantastic book with many others before and after it. (if your trying to read the whole serise in order good luck!) I greatly recomend this book to ALL people who are interested in this topic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Evil vs. evil, and the devil take the hindmost, April 4, 2001
This review is from: Knight of the Black Rose (Ravenloft Terror of Lord Soth, Vol. 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
Lord Soth, the Knight of the Black Rose, is a man cursed by the gods. Doomed to an eternity of undead existence, he seeks to ameliorate his condition by making his true love undead like himself. All his plans come to naught though, when he finds himself transported to another plane of existence, one dominated by creatures as evil and powerful as himself. Driven to return to his world, Krynn, he must outfight the evil around him.

I must admit that I have never read any of the Dragonlance or Ravenloft books before, but the cover of this book caught my eye. This book's story of evil versus evil is refreshingly different from any other book I have ever written. Also, the book's presentation of Soth's descent into his fallen state was quite fascinating. Overall, I found this a very good book, one that I recommend highly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good - Not Great, but Good, April 5, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Knight of the Black Rose (Ravenloft Terror of Lord Soth, Vol. 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
This was my first Ravenloft novel, and, while not great, it was good enough to make me go out and buy the first book in the series, Vampire of the Mists. I especially appreciate Jim Lowder taking the time to go back to study Test of the Twins for the prologue and various other parts of the book - probably a lot of other authors wouldn't have taken the time, and would have ended screwing something up. It's not quite the Lord Soth I remember from DragonLance, though. He seems to caring for a death knight who went through so much pain and suffering in the first two DragonLance trilogies (which serve as an excellent prologue to this book and which I Highly recommend)! A few minor contradictions, but overall well written. -Embe

4.0 out of 5 stars Soth vs Strahd?, September 22, 2000

Some parts of this book were very well done. Others left something to be desired. The encounters between Soth and Strahd were definitely the high points of the story. I anxiously awaited each one. I'm not really used to dwarves with names like "Azrael". His mannerisms and speech were a bit too human for my taste. His battle prowess on the other hand, was decidely dwarven. All in all, I'm glad I read Knight of the Black Rose.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shocking!!, August 21, 1997

This review is from: Knight of the Black Rose (Ravenloft Terror of Lord Soth, Vol. 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of the better Ravenloft books I've read, which really recounts a better part of the characters lives. A great storyline which provides a lot of detail and wanted explanation into the Dark Domains, and how Lord Soth came to visit this place. The undertermined fierceness of the dark lords is interesting as well, as they both clash in a stand-off. The ending will surprise you

5.0 out of 5 stars Lord Soth as only he could be..., August 19, 2005
This review is from: Knight of the Black Rose (Ravenloft Terror of Lord Soth, Vol. 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
Knight of the Black Rose follows one of Dragonlace's best known villians as he finds himself int he Ravenloft world trying to get out. Those of you familiar with the Dragonlance Chronicles will undoubtedly know the name of Lord Soth the Death Knight. The scene stealer of the Chronicles books.

In this book, Soth has been given a new voice by James Lowder. Lowder proves that he has a knack for darkf antasy with his first Ravenloft novel. Lowder proves he is the perfect writer to write this dark fantasy novel.

There is nothing cliche about this book, in fact it breaks the rules of good vs evil. After all, there is no 'good' guys in the Ravenloft world. There is the bad guys, the the worse guys. It's a very interesting take on the fantasy genre.

Lowder has proved over the past couple years that he is a voice to be listened too. I believe right now he is one of the best kept secrets to the writing world. Once his name gets out his popularity will surely explode. Treat yourself to agripping tale and read this book.

I really enjoyed this book. Lord Soth is one of my favorite characters, and this story is well told. All of the other characters are also very good. And the setting is great. If you like Soth and or ravenloft you must read this book.

This review is from: Knight of the Black Rose (Ravenloft Terror of Lord Soth, Vol. 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
Knight of the Black Rose is a very well written book by James Lowder. It chronicles the events of Lord Soth's life after his disappearance from Krynn. The black knight finds himself ripped from the famed lands of the Dragonlance and deposited into the world of Strad in Ravenloft. This book is full of great dark characters, and the reader gets to know more about the famed death knight along the way. The book has it all. The excitement and superb storytelling make it a fun read. The characters are richly portrayed and find themselves in exciting fights and difficult situations. Soth is forced to confront his past. As his future is left hanging in the balance, the death knight has amazing encounters with every sort of denizen and the confrontations he has with the vampric Lord Strad are the thing of fantasy legend. All in all this is an excellent read.

Lord Soth. You're never quite sure what to make of him. Is he a good guy, or a bad guy? But one thing that is for certain, he rocks! If you liked "Vampire of the Mists", you will like this book too, guranteed. Strahd is back in this book but this time he has a new foe. How do you root for the good guy when there isn't one? This is Ravenloft in all it's wonderful splendor!
