A rousing and adventurous score, February 9, 2003
This review is from: Black Knight [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
Randy Edelman, who is no stranger to the comedy genre of scoring, delivers a brilliantly constructed score that is adventurous and comedic in parts. The music is a combination of large orchestral music and groovy percussion licks. "A Queen and a Dream" opens with the main theme stated right away, a 6 note motif played mainly on strings, sometimes brass. This theme reoccurs throughout several of the tracks in the score, with the best rendition in "Romance in the Dark", in which the orchestra soars to great heights. Groovy percussion licks and funky rhythms are the highlight of "Castle World", as well as in the last seconds of "Closing". Another motif present in the score, first off in "Danger In the Early Morning Mist," sounds a lot like the Christmas hymn "Away in a Manger". You may be thinking, "what is this guy talking about," but listen for it because the similarity is astounding. Some adventurous action music can be found in "Black Knight" as well as "Escape Over the Moat" with big orchestral sounds and driving percussion. Overall, another winner from a great composer that is always coming out with something new.
