Knight Rider on DVD - This quality set comes fully equipped,
By
This review is from: Knight Rider - Season One (DVD)
Since I have been an avid Knight Rider fanatic since I was six years old, I picked up the first season DVD boxed set on release day. I have to say, I am very impressed. You might expect a $40 set of DVDs from a campy '80s TV show to be equally campy in their presentation (think Columbia House's own Knight Rider DVD knockoffs), but you'd be wrong. This is a top-quality set. There's a good number of cool extras, the menus and navigation are fantastic, and the video and sound quality of the episodes themselves are astounding. Knight Rider DVDs are finally here, and to my great relief, they did them RIGHT.
The four discs in this set are double-sided, so the publishers were able to save money on the cost of printing discs, keeping the price of the set low. Points to them for that. When you first load up a disc, the unforgettable KR theme music starts and your options are provided in a cool, perspective-shifted layout that has an effect like KITT's scanner behind it. Once you choose which of the episodes you want to watch (there are four episodes per side of each disc), you are presented with a brief synopsis, original air date, and a still image before you dive in. This is GREAT. I'm also a Star Trek fan, and I have to say that Paramount's menus and navigations on the TNG and Voyager DVDs are horrendous compared to this. Knight Rider has got the kind of DVD menus that all DVDs should have. Animated, colorful, yet still very fast to navigate through and full of all the information you need. Visually, the episodes look stunning. Both the audio and video tracks have been remastered, and all of KITT's electronics, glossy black paint and Michael's goofy grins are more sharp and clear than they've ever been, even in 1982. The sound track is unbelievable. Occasionally the sound quality is so good, I wonder if they've actually dubbed in new foley in places. But I think that's just a trick of the ears, as all of the effect seem to be original, they just sound...BETTER. The mixing is perfect, too. And the best part? They didn't screw around with anything, change any content, cut anything out, or fix any bloopers. It's just classic Knight Rider, complete and uncut, and totally "un-fooled-around with." These are the original cuts of each episode as aired on NBC in the '80s, and they contain footage which (unless you have the Columbia House tapes) hasn't been seen since, due to syndication and commercial edits. One other thing I must add here is that ALL of the episodes from Knight Rider's first season are included. My biggest disappointment with the Columbia House release of the show is that they remastered only a handful of episodes from the series' four-year run. This set contains the entire first season of the show in its entirety, presumably with the complete seasons two, three and four to follow. The extras are great, too. There are interviews with David Hasselhoff, Glen Larson and even Stu Phillips (who, together with Glen, composed the infamous Knight Rider theme). Speaking of the theme, there's even an entire extra devoted to how the theme music was created, which was awesome for someone who loves the KR soundtrack (like I do). My only complaint was that Don Peake, the talented man who used Stu and Glen's theme to score probably 85% of the show's episodes, was never mentioned. The bonus fourth disc includes some more nice interviews, some nifty blueprints of KITT's dash, scans of set designs, and even the entire Knight Rider 2000 movie that aired on NBC in 1991! Additionally, "Knight of the Phoenix," the show's pilot episode, has a commentary track available, featuring the voices of Glen Larson and David Hasselhoff. (David's really hamming it up.) This is the DVD boxed set that any Knight Rider aficionado absolutely must own. The producers of this set are to be congratulated for putting together a real quality product. Now I'm waiting for the next three seasons to arrive on DVD too!

I thought that by joining the Columbia House DVD club and subscribing to "Knight Rider" that I would be getting all the episodes from my most favorite 80's show! Not!! They only sent me seven Dvd's with a total of only 16 episodes, and then they stopped sending me anymore after that! So I am just thrilled that finally somebody went out and did this!! I can't wait!1. 1-1 57375 26-Sep-1982 Knight Rider (Pilot; a.k.a. Knight of the Phoenix) (1)

KNIGHT RIDER (KR) is either a show you like or one you don't. I grew up as a teenager watching this show on friday nights and have liked it ever since. KITT is a cool car and concept. In typical 80's fashion you have a hero that meets and dates up a new attractive female in every episode. Each commercial break is usually a life and death cliffhanger, this guarentees the viewer will stay tuned. The bad guys are always rounded up and rarely does a person become injured or die. Some may call the show "cheezy" but I enjoy the simple format. It is nice be be able to escape reality with a show like KR.
The DVD is one of the best I've seen when it comes to putting a seasons worth of shows on DVD. To begin with the pricing is great. Too many shows, STAR TREK & CSI, gouge there fan base with DVD prices between seventy & one hundred dollars. I love DVD's that allow the viewer to play all the episodes back to back. I hate it when I get returned to the main menu after each episode. This DVD has a nice amount of extras and includes the preview for each episode. It also has a written summary of each episode. Adding the 1991 movie of KR 2000 was an unexpected and much appreciated bonus. I don't care for the movie that much and would never purchase it by itself but am glad the DVD producers included it with this DVD package. All in all, most television shows that are released in season format could learn a thing or two from the producers of this DVD package. I await the remaining 3 seasons. I'm also looking forward to the release of MAGNUM PI (season one) on DVD.

The talking car everyone wishes he had...!,

One of the more intriguing television shows of the early-1980s, Knight Rider (and K.I.T.T. in particular) captured the imagination of children everywhere while, at the same time, entertaining adults with its effective utilization of a traditional TV action genre. Knight Rider tells the story of an incredible crime fighting team brought together when the terminally-ill billionaire Wilton Knight saves the life of police officer Michael Long after Long gets shot in the face... When the billionaire helps out, providing Long with a new face and a new identity (Michael Knight), the young officer dedicates the remainder of his life to fighting injustice on behalf of the Foundation of Law and Government (FLAG). Singled out by Wilton Knight and aided by the staff of FLAG, Michael is teamed up with an extraordinary vehicle that, if necessary, is capable of fighting bad guys all by itself...
Knight Rider features David Hasselhoff in the role of Michael Knight, an ex-cop turned private crime fighter. But the true star of the show is Michael's car, K.I.T.T. (Knight Industries Two Thousand), a sleek black Pontiac Trans-Am impervious to bullets, fire, or most any type of mayhem. Outfitted with state-of-the-art, top secret Artificial Intelligence, K.I.T.T. is not only capable of self-operation (with his mission to protect all human life), but he's outfitted with smoke bombs, flamethrowers, infrared sensors, and countless other nifty gadgets. Able to verbally communicate with humans, K.I.T.T. maintains a special friendship with Michael, developing his own personality (which at times provides comic relief for the show). Just as criminal outlaws of the early-1980s feared the wrath of The A-Team, the prospect of a visit from Michael and K.I.T.T. certainly caused many sleepless nights for America's criminal element... The Knight Rider (Season 1) DVD features a number of action-packed episodes including the season premiere "Knight of the Phoenix" in which the downed police officer Michael Long is revived, after being declared dead, by the billionaire philanthropist Wilton Knight. After agreeing to carry out the proposed task of crime fighter, Michael is introduced to K.I.T.T., a sports car durable as tank, outfitted with the latest technologies, able to travel at speeds in excess of 300 mph, and equipped with a mind of its own... Other notable episodes from Season 1 include "Good Day at White Rock" in which Michael and K.I.T.T.'s vacation turns into a working vacation when a biker war erupts in the small town of White Rock, and "A Plush Ride" in which Michael goes undercover as a limousine/bodyguard trainee in order to foil an assassination plot with international implications... Below is a list of episodes included on the Knight Rider (Season 1) DVD: Episode 1 (Knight of the Phoenix: Part 1) Episode 2 (Knight of the Phoenix: Part 2) Episode 3 (Deadly Maneuvers) Episode 4 (Good Day at White Rock) Episode 5 (Slammin' Sammy's Stunt Show Spectacular) Episode 6 (Just My Bill) Episode 7 (Not a Drop to Drink) Episode 8 (No Big Thing) Episode 9 (Trust Doesn't Rust) Episode 10 (Inside Out) Episode 11 (The Final Verdict) Episode 12 (A Plush Ride) Episode 13 (Forget Me Not) Episode 14 (Hearts of Stone) Episode 15 (Give Me Liberty... or Give Me Death) Episode 16 (The Topaz Connection) Episode 17 (A Nice, Indecent Little Town) Episode 18 (Chariot of Gold) Episode 19 (White Bird) Episode 20 (Knight Moves) Episode 21 (Nobody Does It Better) Episode 22 (Short Notice)

Ahhh... The early 1980's. Reagan was president, new wave dominated the radiowaves and MTV actually played MUSIC VIDEOS! Ask anyone who grew up during this period what their favorite non-animated show was as a kid and they'll probably say "Knight Rider." KR, as its affectionately called by some fans, may seem quirky and obscure nowadays with its atari centipede sound effects, poofie aqua-net hairdo's, over-acting and "sooo not the original artist" song usage, but we didn't care...
To us this was the best thing on TV besides Smurfs and He-Man and it appealed to our parents as well. KR was like James Bond meets Herbie the Love Bug. While our mothers drooled over the blue-eyed hunky Hasselhoff, we were captivated by the ominous-looking but friendly talking black Trans Am, K.I.T.T. (Knight Industries Two Thousand) we giggled everytime theives tried to steal KITT and failed, and we cried when KITT got destroyed (but they -always- managed to rebuild him). The visual quality of these discs is damn pretty good. It would've been nice if they had director/actor interviews and maybe some behind the scenes words with George Barris (the guy who built all the KITT cars for the show) I can't say I care for the double sided discs, as they are terribly easy to smudge.

It may be 2004, but KITT is still futuristic! What a great series with amazing technology and some damned good plots. Watch the bonus "Knight Rider 2000: The Movie" which was first seen on NBC about 14 years ago.
What a great 80s series. Definitely recommended.

This is an excellent DVD set. Any Knight Rider afficionado has to remember running top speed towards the tv when they would hear the opening bars of the unforgettable Knight Rider theme. This DVD set brings back that feeling, pop in a dvd & what happens? Here comes the Knight Rider theme.
It is a 4 disc set. The DVDs are double sided, 4 episodes per side. There are 3 discs that include all episodes for the first season, exactly as they aired on NBC back in 1982 (Gosh has it been that long?!?!?!). Episodes are UNCUT..just as it was meant to be (Before the times of syndication). The menus are easy to navigate & user friendly. All episodes include a preview with some short clips with the original air date & a written summary of it. The 4th disc includes a still photo gallery, a "blueprints" gallery, K.I.T.T 's owner's manual and of course who could forget the feature...Knight Rider 2000 Movie. The movie is also as it aired back in 1991. It was a failed attempt at possibly creating a spinoff a few years later, but still grateful to the makers of this set for including it. As I said before, this DVD set is a MUST for any big Knight Rider fan. All of the episodes have been remastered. They look and sound better then ever. The price is very reasonable. My recommendation? Go pick up this DVD set right now. It will be like a trip back through time for anyone who remembers that feeling they got when they heard the Knight Rider theme to open the show. Enjoy!!!

I am one of the many Knight Rider fans that are thankful for the release of this box set. Since the Sci-Fi channel has taken the show off its schedule, I've been looking for other ways to enjoy this show. An extra that I'm looking forward to in this set is the TV Movie "Knight Rider 2000". I recomend this DVD to those who are fan/fanatics of this series, those who like crime/mystery/action, etc., and those who are looking for a great show to see!
