Not as good as it sounds..., April 1, 2008
This review is from: Knight Tenebrae (Knight's Blood) (Paperback)
I grabbed this book thinking it looked like a really fun adventure, set in a great historic era, probably with a touch of romance. I was surprised, however, at how unrealistic the characters are. When the two find themselves suddenly transported hundreds of years back in time, they barely even blink, accept their situation immediately, and question nothing. They make absolutely no attempt to try to get back home, instead joining a quest for no real reason. When confronted with magical creatures, they don't seem at all surprised, though no mention has been made of the existence of any sentient creatures but the human race. The characters aren't actual people in that they don't struggle with their problems or question their fate at all.
I never even finished this book, though I took a decent chunk out of it before giving up. The plotline really isn't all that great (or original, even), and the addition of terrible characters makes the story dry and unrealistic.

This one was great...., June 23, 2008
This review is from: Knight Tenebrae (Knight's Blood) (Paperback)
This story was interesting from page one. Alex was a wonderful hero, and Lindsay [unlike her appearance in KNIGHT'S BLOOD], was a very warm, lovely, and intelligent woman with an uncanny ability to adapt well to her surroundings, whether it be present day Europe and America, or 14th century Scotland. She and Alex were a joy to read about here. I like how the author incorporated Robert the Bruce into their tale, adding intrigue to their antics and setting the tone for their future as nobles some 700 centuries into the past. Great book!!!

magical time travel fantasy romance, September 9, 2006
This review is from: Knight Tenebrae (Knight's Blood) (Paperback)
American Navy pilot Lieutenant Alexander MacNeil is interviewed by London Times reporter Lindsay Pawlowski on their way to Lossiemouth Air Base on the northeast coast of Scotland. A hole opens in the air, ringed with fire with two red eyes looking at them. They pass through the opening and find themselves in Scotland of 1306 where they meet Robert the Bruce who knights Alex after he kills an Englishman loyal to the English king.
Alex and Lindsay meet the elf whose enchantment transported them to the past and he tells them that they ruined his spell and his only goal now is to make them suffer. He transports them seven years in the future where Alex befriends his ancestor Hector, the Laird of Barra. He fights, under the banner of Edward, Robert's brother and is so successful he is awarded ownership of an inhabited island. Alex takes pride in his prowess as a warrior and the wealth and status he earned but Lindsay fears that the man she loves is adapting too well to his new environment and doesn't want to return home even if the elf shows them the way.
Fans of James Henley will thoroughly enjoy this magical time travel fantasy romance. Readers get a good look at the Scottish culture, values, and living conditions of medieval times. Perhaps because Alex was a warrior in the twenty-first century he adapts to his new life but Lindsay wants to go home, because she notes the way the Scottish men treat their women. Julianne Lee has a beautiful voice and if KNIGHT TENEBRAE is any indication, she has a great future ahead of her.
