This is an excellent double CD of a live TD concert recorded in Asheville, NC, reportedly the only live TD concert in the USA in 2011. The occasion was the first MoogFest, a festival of music honoring the inventor of the Moog synthesizer who lived part of his life in Asheville. The sound quality is super. If it wasn't for the occasional crowd sounds I wouldn't have known this was a live recording. The choice and quality of the music presented is consistently high throughout the 2 discs. My approach to TD music is simple: I like some of their music allot and find it enjoyable at many levels (with occasional chill bumps of pleasure); others of their releases don't appeal to me, even after repeated listenings, and they stay on the shelf. Everytime I play "Knights of Asheville" I enjoy all of it, consistently, on both discs. I am frequently struck with the qualities of depth, mystery and the unknown, which have always attracted me TD. It is joy to own this disc and realize that, after all these years, TD still has what it takes to push the envelope, yet again, in the production of music thru electronics.

Tangerine Dream's "Knights of Asheville" is an excellent 2-CD release of the band's live concert appearance at Moogfest, Asheville, North Carolina in 2011. The line-up on the night was the more or less standard one these days of Edgar Froese, Thorsten Quaeschning, Linda Spa, Iris Camaa and Bernhard Beibl, augmented on this occasion by Hoshiko Yamane. The numbers are mostly drawn from the albums "Views From a Red Train" and "Angel of the West Window", with a spattering of classic concert pieces, such as 'Stratosfear '95' and 'Long Island Sunset' -- this latter not in the best live version I've ever heard, I have to confess, the whole lot topped and tailed with tracks from "Edgar Allan Poe's Island of the Fay". There is also a ten-minute new work, 'Asheville Sunrise', as well as a 4-minute Froese solo studio add-on as a bonus track, 'View from a Distant Star', neither of which are otherwise available (at the time of writing -- this will no doubt change).

All in all the concert was a typical Tangerine Dream high-octane affair and this release is well worth a listen, for all that much of the content will be familiar to established fans. The most interesting aspect of the music for me is to hear how much richer the music from "The Angel of the West Window" could have been had there been greater input from the band members beyond Edgar and Thorsten in the studio version; good stuff.

The CD booklet also offers a goodly collection of photos of the concert.

I was at this concert and wanted to have a record of it. Unlike other times I'd seen TD, this concert was almost entirely recent material with only one or two "classic" tracks all evening. Not having been as adamant about acquiring the more recent studio releases as I was back in the 70s to the mid 80s, when I was at the concert, I didn't recognize most of the pieces that night - but I have since checked out some and face it, these guys (and gals) are pros - they SOUND great even if you don't know the material.

I attended this concert and say this is an excellent representation of the night. Though nothing beats being surrounded by the sound, people swaying on the floor to the beat, that was the live show. I couldn't wait for this CD to be released.

The high points:
- Carmel Calif is a great uplifting track with Pink Floyd'ish style guitar soloing, had people dancing on the floor.
- Asheville Sunrise is my favorite track, a great space-out jam. The live show had a bit of feedback at the beginning of this song that nearly shattered my teeth. This has been gratefully minimized on the CD.
- One Night in Space is the TD 'ambient rock-n-roll' sound I originally got hooked on and had a great instrumental performance
- Ditto with Dream Phantom of the Common Man
- Stratosfear 95 was a very energetic performance that I loved

A few of the song choices I didn't care for (e.g. Long Island Sunset), but none of the performances were bad. The mix was excellent in most places, though I think the weakest one was "View from a Distant Star" which 'felt' rushed. Almost like a soundcheck (it wasn't performed at the concert).
