5.0 out of 5 stars Another great, captivating mix of sci-fi and magic Must read!
This book is another great one in the Mag Force 7! Mixing science fiction and magic and plot twists and humor and mystery, Margaret Weis comes up with a fun to read book! The characters are detailed and have their own troubles and triumphs which make them seem like real people. The fights between good and evil are balanced by both sides winning and losing sometimes...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Idea, but could have been taken a bit further
I feel that Margaret Weis's and Don Perrin's " Knights of Black Earth " was a good premise for a book but it just didn't go far enough with the characters and their talents, which were described early in the book. About a quarter of the specialists never even came into play as what they should have been; like Tycho, the sniper. He never even used his sniper...

This book got me hooked on her other series'. Overall this book is A1, numero uno, first, cream of the crop and if you think this book was great, wait till you read her other books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing piece of writing, May 18, 2004
I usually don't read Sci-Fiction, but this book caught my eye at the library, so I decided to give it a try, and I am so happy that I did. This story takes place in the same universe as the Star of the Gaurdians series (good series, but not as interesting as the Mag Force 7 series). This is a great book with a whole host of crazy characters, and more plot twists than a mystery novel. It follows the story of Xris, an ex-Federal agent who was betrayed by his own partner. He is now a cyborg, and the leader of a mercenary group called Mag Force 7. This adventure takes you all over the universe and introduces you to a whole bunch of interesting characters (Raoul and the Little One being the most interesting). This is a must have for any Sci-fi/Fantasy reader

He never even used his sniper rifle, and only pulled it out once. Jamil was pretty much the same story; he never used anything you would call a heavy weapon. The beginning couple of chapter's that detailed the assassination of the Queen made a nice introduction to Raoul and the Little One, but those two (whom I thought were the books most interesting characters) were effectivly removed from the better part of the book. All in all, I feel that this book is worth a one-time read, but it just doesn't have the power to it that another book, such as Starship Troopers or Armor might have that would warrant a second reading. 5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book!!, December 28, 1998

I really enjoyed this book. It captivated me. The story is action, action, action. The character development is very well done. I love star trek and star wars and I usually don't like many other books, but this was very good. Read this book if you love Sci-fi and action!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, great action, keep it up Weis and Hickman!, July 18, 1998

I really liked this book, just as the Deathgate Cycle made me expect. I'm not trying to diss W&H, I really love their books, but I couldn't make it through Starshield: Sentinels. Of course, now that I read this book, I'm gonna go back and try again. I hated the sex change idea. By the end I could accept it, but felt that Rowan copped out and didn't face his/her own problems. I would've liked it more if he/she could've been more courageous. Raoul and the Little One, (especially the Litle One) should've been in the plot more, but it was so cool at the end with the little one saving the day. Yes! Over all, I'm awaiting the next one, and keep developing characters. But above everything else, thank god they blew things up.

5.0 out of 5 stars This novel takes the old gang-of-buddies-out-to-save-the-world to a rare level of excellence., July 2, 1998

This was the first Weis novel I've read of only two so far, so I can't comment on it as a spin-off of the Dion Starfire novels, which get some minor mention in the book (and incidently tell you the end of the Star of the Guardian books, so read them first). The novel, however, stands on its own and is in the classic tradition of "Where Eagles Dare"--a gang of buddies out for revenge for one of theirs must infiltrate a military base, with twist upon twist following. Many loveable, intriguing characters and enough page-turning action to keep you up all night. Interesting sexual tension with the sex-changed character and the cyborg.

This off shoot of the "Star of the Guardians" series is another great work. I enjoyed the series and now I will enjoy the continuing work. Please don't stop. I would like to see more stories on both

4.0 out of 5 stars Mag Force 7 wins!, May 18, 2000
The Knights of Black Earth, takes you back to the Universe of the "Star of the Guardians" series also by Hickman. This novel focuses on Xris, the part man, part robot mercenary. Xris has formed a new mercenary group called Mag Force 7. Also found in this group are the Loti Raoul, and the engimatic Little One.

Xris has found his long lost partner back in the days when he was a federal agent. Xris has a few questions for his partner regarding his last failed mission as a federal agent. However, to get to this partner will be deadly, and cause total chaos to the universe!

I happened upon this book which one of my children brought home this Spring. Is it readable? Yes, but I found the writing style awkward and somewhat confusing. The Characters and plot devices were original, but shallow. Call me a geek, but I would have liked more information on how and why a nano-machine would explode and why only one individual in the galaxy possessed this apparently useful innovation than listen to our hero lament the loss of his wife, his best bud, and various body parts. Read it if the book falls in your lap, but don't expect Heinlein.
