Without a name to define him, Scorcha and the reader see his character from within from the beginning. As the external battle to discover the truth behind a web of lies that endanger Scorcha heats up, the physical attraction and feelings between Scorcha and Hugh draw them to one another. Before Hugh can take her as his own, however, he must learn the truth of her past as well as his own. As the two must both face the demons of their past within themselves, the external dangers mount. Joanne Rock creates a wonderful balance between the internal and external pressures on the couple that heightens each as the romance moves to the final pages. In THE KNIGHT'S RETURN, Joanne Rock not only creates a delightfully wicked villain but she also adds just the right measure of plot twists to make their journey riveting from start to finish. In THE KNIGHT'S RETURN, the medieval world is an integral part of the romance, not just in terms of historical authenticity but also the spirit beyond the words. Hugh's journey, including the boon he asks of Scorcha's father, are true to theme of the quest in medieval literature. A Knight too stupid to live,

Knight Hugh de Montagne is lost with no memory of who he is or where he is or what he's about. He follows his instincts, which leads him to Irish princess Sorcha. At the king's request, Hugh takes on the role of Sorcha's suitor to guard her until the king sends her off to a nunnery. Sorcha's life and the life of her son are in peril, and it is up to Hugh to figure out where the threat is coming from and what part he plays in it.
I was having a hard time connecting to the characters, but kept reading. The storyline was interesting--I wanted to know more about the intrigue behind Hugh's memory loss and Sorcha's ill-fated marriage. Unfortunately, this story was a complete loss for me. I have come to the conclusion that amnesia stories are not my thing: they annoy me. But really, it wasn't the memory loss that did it in for me, it was the moment I realized Hugh (and Sorcha) are just too stupid to live that I put the book down and didn't pick it back up. Too stupid to live? Well, Sorcha had been tricked into a false marriage, which left her with a child. Her fake husband died, according to the sworn testimony of one of her father's servants, Eamon. Eamon swears up and down that he saw her fake husband die and even describes it in detail. When Hugh and Sorcha realize that her fake husband isn't dead at all and where he is, they send in Eamon in as "spy" or a "scout" saying that no one would recognize him. Excuse me a moment while I explain this concept to Hugh and Sorcha: Eamon SAYS he watched fake husband die, but he's not dead. That should tell you that he LIED and can't be trusted. And for a suspicious knight like Hugh, this fact that he lied would also lead you to wonder if Eamon were to have seen the fake death of fake husband, don't you think Eamon would be known to the fake husband? Therefore, sending an untrustworthy liar undercover to your enemy who knows his face is a bad decision. Bad. Stupid. For a knight who had such great instincts (Hugh's words, not mine) he sure did miss a whopper. I couldn't buy into it.
