Gameplay:

Do you like real-time strategy? Or are role-playing games your preference. Why not try both genres in one--or even both separately? In one game: KnightShift!

The Single Player RTS part of the game consists of three addictive, story-driven campaigns. Each of them takes place in a different geographical area and bounds you every minute with new challenges like rescuing a kidnapped princess or fighting a ferocious dragon--or combat with nasty, ugly, smelly monsters and the bones of the walking dead.

During the campaigns players develop their characters and gain access to new weapons, special armor, and magic items. They also have the possibility of creating new characters or building new structures. All characters controlled by the player gain experience and go "level-up", increasing their combat potential and magical abilities. The characters may also find special items and weapons, armor, and magical amulets, helping them to increase and enhance their skills.

Additionally, an extensive RPG mode surprises with an even larger selection of maps, quests, weapons, and enemies, plus a highly improved character development. Skills selection, merchandise, the hiring of helpful characters, and character inventories. This RPG Mode for experienced gamers can be played alone or over the Internet in companion network matches.

For RTS fans and friends of massive multiplayer battles, several RTS skirmish and MP modes guarantee endless hours of exciting gameplay.

Multiplayer

Network games allow the participation of up to eight players per match and 65,000 players per server. Available connection types are: IPX, TCP/IP or EarthNet. Internet play is established using the EarthNet server system.

The servers support meeting and chatting with other gamers, viewing statistics data of other players, and setting up network games. Every player on the server has his/her own account protected by a password. With each server account up to eight self developed RPG characters with their own inventory, skills, and level ups can be managed. League and Companion MP matches are supported.

MP matches are possible in RTS Battle, RTS destroy structure, and RPG adventure mode with predefined or self-created maps and modes.

This review is from: Knightshift (CD-ROM)
Bad graphics, and slow interface turn this into a real plodder. I only played the RPG version and not the RTS, but I was board within minutes. When compared to Neverwinter Nights... well, it's not even worthy of the comparison. It doesn't even come close to the original Baldur's Gate, and that is three generations of RPG back.
I personally found it annoying that I couldn't choose the gender of my character, and that the character portraits were, lets face it, ugly. There is nothing to customize in character generation, and skills can only improve along one dimension. I could go on, but why bother?
