5.0 out of 5 stars Spacesaver In My Knitting Bag
Love this little kit!!!!! One of my knitting group friends had one. So I got one too. Took awhile to find it. So nice not to have to lug a big plastic box around. Sometimes I take my knitting in a ziploc bag, if it's a small project. This fits right in so I have everything I need with me. Definitely is the swiss army knife of knitting. Would be a great Christmas...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good idea, really cheap materials
When I saw the Knit Kit, I was very excited about it the idea of it. Unfortunately it was implemented poorly, with some of the cheapest plastic I've seen in a while. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good idea, really cheap materials, November 28, 2009

When I saw the Knit Kit, I was very excited about it the idea of it. Unfortunately it was implemented poorly, with some of the cheapest plastic I've seen in a while. Not all plastic is bad, but this is the flimsy brittle kind - you know the stuff I mean. Below is a list of what did and did not work.

I would be willing to pay more for a version with higher quality materials that do not break. All in all, it's the coolness factor of a specialty tool is what makes this concept attractive. But know this: it's actually a rather large device - almost the size of my entire hand, so yes, it takes up as much space all those accessories would if they were combined in a bag. Until the manufacturer updates the Knit Kit with reasonably sturdy material, get yourself a cute little zip top bag, and you can store all these type of items in the same space, without the frustration of breakage, or custom parts.

--DID NOT WORK--
Here's the parts that immediately broke, before I even used it:

The crochet hook snaps in place on the outside of the unit. The second time I put it away, the hook head snapped off. *sigh* That is totally useless now, and a custom part impossible to replace.

The row counter has a lock feature on it. I imagine this is so that when the kit is bumping around in your bag, the number doesn't accidentally increase. Unfortunately the lock works less than 1/2 the time. It's not completely useless, but be warned.

You'll want to replace the stitch markers. They are made of a rubbery substance that got pinched between the compartment door and the wall of the scissor well in shipping. Many arrived deformed and some were pinched to the point of breaking open. If you are a knitter, you probably already have a nicer set anyway.

-- DID WORK --
Here's the stuff that seems to work, so if this is all you need, maybe it's still worth it:

The Tape Measure seems to work just fine, even the return button, which is important.

The compartment is useful for holding those itty bitty accessories. (I'm worried about the compartment door breaking off given what happened to the crochet hook, but so far so good. I'll just be careful.)

The scissors cut yarn, and the thread cutter will break thread. I'm not sure how the scissors are TSA complaint, but I'll find out soon. Crossing my fingers they don't get taken away because the thread cutter will not cut yarn.

The point protectors are there, and feel rubbery. They look cheap but seem ok. I don't use them myself.

-Thanks, and I hope you found this helpful in making your decision to try or skip.

2.0 out of 5 stars Handy - BUT, December 6, 2009

The concept for this product is good. The execution is not so good. The materials are cheaply made plastic. The crochet hook is permanently bent, so it is almost impossible to use to pick up dropped stitches. It IS handy for keeping all of your "knitting notions" together, but I would rather put things together in a baggie so that I can have better quality products in one spot.

I've had the pink version of this kit for several months. It's a nice idea but poorly executed. The crochet hook can fall out and get lost. One of the shop models had lost it's and one was lost even though the kit was still sealed in the package. The tips and stitch markers are soft rubber. Not my favorites but serviceable. There's room for a few more if you take tips out. The spring for the tape measure broke the first time I tried to measure something near it's full length. I took the kit apart to try to fix it. The spring had slipped out of it's housing. I've not been able to get it back together and working again. You can put together a similar kit using a small zipper pouch. It's not as neat and compact but it will last longer and cost less.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money, November 6, 2010

This is a great idea done in the cheapest possible way and priced far, far above what it's worth. Do yourself a favor and just repurpose an old make-up pouch and buy knitting notions on sale.

4.0 out of 5 stars Convenient!, September 26, 2010

I bought this to take on an airplane, since it's TSA certified. None of the airport screeners seemed to mind it, and it does contain many of the accessories I like to have along when knitting: scissors, stitch counter, crochet hook, tape measure, point protectors, and stitch markers. (I didn't use their thread cutter much.) When I am not flying, I add a large-eyed needle to the compartment with the stitch markers, and find it very useful.

This is great when you knit on the run. I'm still hard pressed to leave behind my standbys. The scissors BARELY cut yarn, which was a bit sad, but the other features are great and I would rather have those scissors than nothing.

If you're a new knitter just gathering supplies, GET THIS. It has all the little odds and ends you will frequently use as you become more experienced. If you're an old hand, GET THIS. It's the perfect knitting traveling companion. It's small and compact and has everything you'll need when you're knitting on the go. Between the Knit Kit, my Knit Picks interchangeable needles, and some yarn, I don't need anything else!
If you need a little more of an idea how awesome this is, the week before Thanksgiving I was on a road trip from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles. I decided to knit the Subway Mittens, an Interweave Knits pattern. The first mitten was knit before I got the Knit Kit (I found an awesome yarn store in LA). I fumbled around my bag for scraps of yarn for stitch markers, dug through my pocket for clippers to cut yarn, and kept losing a crochet hook.
Well, I got the Knit Kit and the knitting of the second mitten on the way back to Salt Lake was a breeze. It was so nice to just have to feel for the smooth plastic case of the Knit Kit and pluck out what I needed. It's a great gadget and it will make the perfect gift for any knitter.

No more digging for knitting notions! They are all here in one handy little compact. The only thing I would have added was a plastic blunt eyed needle for finishing projects. I added my own in the back compartment, and now my kit is REALLY complete! So neat I gave one to a friend for her bday, and she was delighted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Kit!, January 8, 2012
This review is from: The Knit Kit Black- All Your Knitting Notions In One Unit!
I really don't understand all the negative reviews for this item. I have a knit kit that I have had for years now, and not one thing on it has broken. I am, of course, very careful with my things. You do need to be careful when removing the crochet hook from the side and sometimes it is a little hard to get out; the stitch markers and needle caps have worked just fine. I love the way the tape measure pulls out and retracts when you push a button and I've never had a problem with my counter coming unlocked after I have locked it. This is not really meant to be your "go to" tools when knitting at home; its a kit meant for travel and it works just fine for that. I love mine and will probably invest in another one at some point in time. I would not be afraid to recommend this item to any of my knitting friends!
