5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful Collection of Noro Patterns June 10, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I remember the first time I ever saw Noro yarn, about 15 years ago. It's imprinted on my mind - it was just that beautiful. I bought enough yarn to make myself a sweater and to this day it's one of my favorite pieces of clothing. Noro patterns have come a long way. They started out in little pamphlets that were hard to read and not very aesthetic. Now we have this beautiful book Knit Noro: 30 Designs in Living Color along with several wonderful Noro books by Jane Ellison. The books come up to the beauty of the yarn and the patterns are now varied and beautiful.

This book is a stand-out with its thirty patterns. All have something to say for themselves but some stand out more than others. I was drawn to the following:

The Belted Cardigan Vest in diagonal stripes with a matching belt knit with Noro Silk Garden
The Ridged Ripple ScarfNoro Yarns Silk Garden Sock Yarn
The Cabled Hat knit with Noro Yarns Silk Garden
The Chevron Throw which is exquisite in its blues, browns and greens, knit with Noro Kuryon
The Spiral Beanie knit with Noro Silk Garden
Leaf Lace Socks in lovely shades of blue and violet knit with Noro Silk Garden Sock Yarn
Lacy Gaiter knit with Noro Silk Garden Sock Yarn
Sideways Stripes Vest is a real winner with its multi-colored primary colors knit with Noro Taiyo
Patchwork Afghan knit with Noro Taiyo in lovely shades of pink, orange, browns and black
Felted Cloche knit with Noro Kureyon and then felted
The Striped Shawl is something I know I'll knit soon. It's that lovely. It has shades of purple, green, brown and gray and is knit with Noro Kuryon
The Fair Isle Cap looks Norwegian in style and is knit with Noro Kuryon

I've picked out my favorites and they number twelve, almost half of the number of patterns in the book.

When I purchase a knitting book I ask myself these questions:

Will I knit the patterns?

Is the book a good resource?

Are the patterns easy to understand?

The answer to all three questions is an absolute 'YES'. This is a wonderful book. If you love Noro, you'll love this book. If you haven't yet discovered Noro, this book will make a Noro lover out of you. It is a wonderful addition to my knitting library.

2.0 out of 5 stars Why is the pattern print so light? July 22, 2011
Format:Hardcover
This is a beautiful book with some good patterns, but I wish I had looked at the patterns (instead of the pictures) before I spent money on it. The patterns are printed on a beige background, with a very light and almost indistinguishable font, and in very small print. This makes them virtually impossible to read while knitting.

I think publishers do this (use a light font on a colored background) to keep people from photocopying the pages, but I wish they would stop. If I spend this much money for a knitting book, I think I deserve to have legible patterns.

As far as the patterns are concerned, Noro is a very brightly colored yarn, so you have to be careful when using it or you will end up with something ugly and garish, like the "Long Vest" on page 34. Horrible. It looks like a short vest with a nasty granny afghan tacked onto the bottom of it, possibly the ugliest garment I have ever seen, enough to turn me off knitting. In a different colorway, it would still be horrible.

Dear Noro Designers: Subtle is better. If you're going to use a really loud yarn, like the ones selected for the "Entrelac Scarf" (I do like the variation on the entrelac) or the "Lacy Gaiter", it's better for a small project than a large one.

That said, a decent portion of the patterns are doable. I have to say I love the "Patchwork Afghan" and will probably make it. (Perhaps Noro is better used for blankets?) The "Cheveron Throw" is also good, and the "Modular Afghan" is interesting, but the colors are awful. The book also includes a few good patterns for sweaters, and also socks, hats, gloves, scarves, a hooded vest, and one good shawl.

Good luck trying to read the print in the patterns....

5.0 out of 5 stars Not A Bad One In The Bunch May 25, 2011
Format:Hardcover
This book is a winner! Every pattern in it is drool-worthy...I think I want to make them all. There are sweaters, vests, socks, gloves, blankets and hats, all stunning in Noro's wonderful colors. Eisaku Noro has such a superb eye for color that even the simplest item is striking. If you like Noro, you'll love this book.

Noro is in a world of its own. Combine that with some texture and shape and you have a fun knitting experience. The entrelac scarf is straight of the runway. :-)

Love the colors of Noro's line (although I have yet to buy a skein that hasn't been knotted together at some point, which REALLY annoys me) and I like the patterns. Read more
