More About the Author

Hello readers, my name is Claire Garland and I am an author of knitting books and knitting patterns.
I have written several bestselling knitting books with publishers including FW Media, Avova Books Group, Octopus Publishing & MQ Publications.
I live with my husband and three children in a pretty stone cottage in rural Cornwall where I knit and crochet and sell and showcase my patterns worldwide via my blog, Etsy and Ravelry - I also find time (perhaps too much time!) to be inspired by my favourite site Pinterest, other folks' blogs and the many glorious books available today. - My vice - book buying - my latest as I write this; Sibella Court's Gypsy and What Katie Ate by Katie Quinn Davies.

I have 2 of claire garland's other books,("knitted babes" and "dream toys"),and I like them both very much. When I saw "knit and purl pets" I fell in love with adorable pictures of the projects in the book so I bought it. Now I realize that you can't judge a book by the way it looks. When I started knitting the projects I quickly discovered that the directions contain a lot of errors and missing information in critical places. I'm an experienced knitter so I was able to fill in the blanks in some cases, but not all.
I won't open this book again, it's too frustrating.
Maybe they will come out with corrections later, I hope so.

I like a lot of the patterns in here.
Cavaet: There are errors and that would be okay. But the only place i could find the errata is to go to the publisher and they had to send them to me thru an email? Seems there has to be an easier way?

I love the creatures they offer for projects BUT when I tried the cat I found the directions to be semi-awful. They tell you to save 5 stitches on a safety pin to be worked later as the tail. Then when it's time to knit the tail, they say slide 7 stitches from safety pin to make tail. Okay, which is it? 5 or 7?? I find mistakes like that very frustrating. I haven't tried any of the other patterns.
PS That's not the only problem but I can't quite remember the other frustrations I faced.

What an adorable collection of knitted critters! The pictures are great - the projects both fun and challenging! BUT there are corrections needed - I began the white hen and ended up frustrated beyond words. I've written to the publisher and not heard back although they promise a 24 hour turnaround. We NEED the corrections posted online! The author has not included a M1 in her abbreviations and one must guess how she wants an increase made. There is an error in the chicken pattern and I can't find it. HELP!!!

With a little searching I found the errata corrections for this book. Rather a lot of them. The author posted them herself as I guess the publisher wasn't offering adequate support.

[...]

You'll have to subscribe to get them but they're free. Upload one document and you can download quite a bit. She has some other free patterns too.

3 stars for the errors and hoops to jump through to get the corrections.

Hope everyone likes my bread machine recipe I uploaded to get the errata downloaded.

I was very excited to get this book. I'm a avid knitter and this kind of stuff is right up my alley. I started knitting the chicken and the first mistake in the pattern was in row 6 where it says kft instead of kfb. Then after Rnd 35 it says to repeat rows 26-30 three times. Well, that didn't work at all. I started looking online to see if there were any corrections for the pattern and I finally found some on Ravalry. You are supposed to repeat rows 32-35 three times. Now I'm on the COMB section of the pattern and under Row 3 the directions say picot 5, k1, picot 4, etc... Well, I haven't done that before and there were no instructions in the book to clarify how to do it. I looked online and there were a number of different instructions for picot some casting on and some yo, not sure how it was supposed to be done so I'm just doing it my own way. This pattern is rated easy and I'm an experienced knitter and find it frustrating and confusing. In the time it has taken me to figure this out I could have knitted 2 hats! The animals are really cute but I'm not so sure I want to try another pattern.

I am a beginning knitter and have recently found patterns by English designer Alan Dart. Saw this book and thought the price was good so I ordered it. Unfortunately unlike Alan Dart, this designer uses DPN for every pattern. I'm not willing to do that technique so this is not very useful for me. If you are comfortable with double pointed needles, this book is OK.

I found the text repitious and lackluster. Some of the designs were cute, but there were no finished sizes provided. I really HATE working through a section of a pattern and them having to pull out and re-write the instructions.
