4.0 out of 5 stars great for beginners
There are 16 scarf patterns and lots of advice especially for beginners so this would be a great book to start out with. My favorite scarf is the final one using a double decrease technique to form diamonds and it is explained very well. Lots of different yarns plus alternate yarns listed as well for many of the patterns. I'm docking her one star because she suggests...

2.0 out of 5 stars For the Extremely New Knitter
This book is only for the beginner. It's full of garter-stitch, drop stitch, rib and other basic stitch pattern scarves. The only thing I found interesting, that would be nice to see in other pattern books, is that for each pattern, she has a section called "Another Yarn to Try" where 1-3 other yarns of different fibers and/or weights are swatched in pattern. It's a good...

There are 16 scarf patterns and lots of advice especially for beginners so this would be a great book to start out with. My favorite scarf is the final one using a double decrease technique to form diamonds and it is explained very well. Lots of different yarns plus alternate yarns listed as well for many of the patterns. I'm docking her one star because she suggests beading as an embellishment and has a photo of it but nowhere does she tell how to do it. And on another lacey pattern which she admits can be difficult, she should have put in a chart to make it easier. But the pictures are great and the format and price are just right.

4.0 out of 5 stars inspiring and good, January 3, 2005

Very good book. 16 patterns, as the cover states, but the pattern stitches inspire you a lot to design your own scarves. All of them look nice, except the last one consists of many, many mohair squares that must be knit separately then attached later. That thought doesnt exactly excite me, so i think ill skip that one...
not a knitting instruction book, either--the knitting instructions in the beginning are meant more for review than teaching. get this book if you already know how to knit and dont depend on it to teach you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed, March 7, 2005

My friend and I are starting a little side business where we are selling custom designed scarves. This book was perfect for that. It gives great basic patterns for scarves and shows the stitches in various fancy yarns. If you are not a creative type who likes your end product to look exactly like the picture, don't buy this. If you like to try different yarns and be a little creative in your knitting, this is the perfect book for you.

It's a good jumping off point for for beginners who are afraid of straying from exactly what the pattern calls for.

4.0 out of 5 stars worthwhile, October 25, 2006
This review is from: Knit Scarves!: 16 Cool Patterns to Keep You Warm (Hardcover)
I have a pretty large collection of knitting books and knit almost every day. By now, I've found that no single book provides 100% of what I look for, but most contain some new ideas and some interesting patters. A scarf is a very basic garment, just a long strip of cloth, really, but there are endless variations. Knit Scarves contains some lovely patterns, as well as clear instructions and diagrams covering how to accomplish the various techniques and stitches. Each pattern has a little supplement attached suggesting yarns to try in addition to the one shown. A good stimulus for creativity. This one has found a place in my permenant library.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Can't Believe I'm Knitting These Patterns!, February 11, 2007

If you can knit, purl, increase and decrease but nothing more (like myself) please try this book. I can't believe I am knitting the fan pattern. I have played with the lace pattern and getting a little better at it with every try. This book is perfect for me. I can take basic knitting skills and turn them into something pretty. Any yarn can be substituted as I only use synthetics. Learn "Fair Isle" or patterned knitting too. I have found the instructions and pictures to be very clear and helpful.

I agree, this book is for the beginning or basic knitter (like myself) ready to branch out. I'm glad I purchased this book. It is helping me on the way to learn more knitting patterns and to become more confidant with my knitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars My First Knitting Book, August 23, 2007
This review is from: Knit Scarves!: 16 Cool Patterns to Keep You Warm (Hardcover)
This was my first knitting book purchase and I absolutely love it. Not only is the book a different and neat shape, but the patterns are easy to follow and there are some helpful tips and know-hows included. I like how the book isn't too big so I am able to carry it almost anywhere. I have already completed 3 scarves out of the book in a matter of 1 month! I recommend anyone to purchase this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun book for all knitters, January 22, 2008

This review is from: Knit Scarves!: 16 Cool Patterns to Keep You Warm (Hardcover)
I was attracted to this book because I wanted to make a scarf and was looking for some ideas. The book has an attractive cover and when I looked through it in my local store, I found new stitches and some really interesting scarf patterns. It also has some very useful information that is great for all levels of knitters.

The introductory sections cover basics such as selection of needles and yarn for a project, a glossary of terms, and how to check your guage. There's an illustrated section on casting on and casting off which is very basic and then there are sections on design, calculating number of stitches, and how to fix mistakes. There are also discussions of knitting with more than one color, how to make a pom-pom, and how to fringe a scarf. These sections are short but very well done.

The core of the book contains patterns for 16 scarves and includes color photos plus suggestions and pictures of different yarns that can be substituted for each pattern. The stitches run from the very basic all knit beginner level to the very advanced challenging level. There is something for everyone here.

I have completed one scarf using a pattern in this book but substituting a similar yarn since the specific yarn in the pattern comes from England and is very expensive. That's the only drawback with these patterns - the actual yarns are not the types you can get easily in the big box craft stores.

I recommend this book for anyone who likes to knit scarves. It would make a great gift for a beginner. Having learned to knit by making scarves, I found that there was lot of new ideas for me to try. The finished products will make great gifts too.

This book is full of diverse scarves for all skills of knitters. The thing that I liked about it was that it allows you to practice new 'scary' styles of knitting ie cabling without having to tackle a huge garment, thus gaining confidence whilst gaining a scarf! Well laid out, good pictures and clear instructions.
