I Like It!!,

It's odd, it's different and it's British - what's not to love?!? Very neatly packaged book with a good informative section and accessible projects which some might view as oddities, however I have state - just how many sweaters can a person own and use? Sometimes it's good to get off the beaten track and do something different. This is it.

It doesn't have to be functional to be fun!,

I am a very beginner knitter and have been uninspired to improve my skills with the more functional books and patterns. This book with it's crazy, fun and non-funtional projects is just what I needed to inspire me. Who says everything you knit has to have a specific purpose? Lighten up, people! The imagery is fun and eye catching and I love the wacky models - you can tell the author and all those involved had alot of fun putting this book together. And P.S. - the rounded corners are such a nice touch!

Great gift!,
This review is from: Knitorama: 25 Great & Glam Things to Knit (Paperback)
I sent this book to my cousin who is a big knitter (she was knitting during our family Thanksgiving) and she LOVED it! She was so excited to create some of the great ideas from the book and was really motivated by the author's creativity. This is a wonderful, low cost gift book for any knitter you know.

Depending on your point of view, "Knitorama" is either completely impractical or the most fantastic knitting book ever written. Whichever way you look at it, however, you have to admit that the projects in it are different. This book contains patterns for the following items:*A dishcloth. *Big bows to add to decorate furniture. *An apple protector. *Fried-egg earmuffs. *Shoelaces. *A duster glove (one of the loopy ones). *An assortment of small cakes. *A chocolate cake. *A ham sandwich. *A glass of beer (crocheted). *Assorted vegetables. *Chicken booties. *A picture frame cover. *A hand grenage. *A rather ugly but simple to make cardigan. *Flying ducks to attach to a wall. *Socks with flowers and leaves on them. *Speaker covers. *A sponge cover. *A blindfold. *A hot water bottle cover. *A garter. *Underpants. *A bra. *A nightdress. I would imagine that many of the patterns in this book would appeal to either teenagers or children. The beginning of this book contains a set of basic instructions on how to knit, with clear photos of each step, and many of the patterns are relatively simple, so a beginner should be able to make at least some of the items in this book, although I would say that they would be inappropriate for young children (I learned to knit at age 8 and I don't think I could have knitten them then). Overall, this is the perfect book to buy if you are looking for projects to make as presents for others or if you are looking for something different to make for yourself.

Knitorama is pure sillyness and fun. It's definitely for the knitting obsessed. You have a knitted ham sandwich, a knitted cake, knitted lingerie and the sillyness continues. I really love the socks with the flowers growing on them.Purely imaginative, it would be a great gift for someone TOTALLY OBSESSED BEYOND BELIEF with knitting or a teenager between the ages of 10 and 18. It's knitting as art.

I've never seen a knitting book like this before! The patterns are fun and funky, and make great gifts (my favorite? The pint of Guiness!)

I disagree, I think this book is quirky while still being practical. I am a learning knitter and the book helped me through the first steps and into a world of wonderful knitting fun. Not only are the 25 designs creative and chic, they allow one to embellish with personal touches, and go on to create completely unique designs with a flair and confidence I would otherwise have lacked. My favorites include the hand grenade and speaker covers. The designs some may find silly such as knit sandwiches and cakes I found entertaining and helpful technically. The author, though British translates well to an American audience and her quirky photos as well as the collage-type designs add a homeyness and familiarity to the book as a whole. A must have for old hands and beginners, go out and get it!

Maybe I'm not imaginative, but most of the things this book offers are decorative items, not functional items. And they're not particularly attractive or interesting decorative items. A knitted pint glass? What FOR? I don't mind the occasional tchotchky, but these items are both silly and useless, as far as I'm concerned. There are two exceptions, a cute nightgown designed in the style of a twenties flapper dress, and a pair of ear muffs made of knitted fried eggs. If you like this kind of thing, and I don't know anyone who does, or if you like to knit and want to punish everyone you know with presents they'll hate, this is the book for you. Otherwise, stay far, far away.

This book is full of neat little things to knit like a hand grenade and a cake and bows. But the beginning section explaining all of the different stitches and such is actually really helpful.

Hit or miss....,
This review is from: Knitorama: 25 Great & Glam Things to Knit (Paperback)
This book is a strange combination of patterns--some very retro, as in things you'd find in old pattern leaflets for items sold at church bazaars, and some cute little novelty items that you might want to knit for your children. If the "Glam" in the title was supposed to be short for "glamorous", well, those items were not--silly is probably a better description. The knitted grenade is kind of cute, however. The directions were not the clearest, either, and more than one pattern left me wondering why the author chose the more difficult way of doing something--the sponge bag could have been worked circularly, for instance, and the cape could have been worked in one piece with different patterns and then sewn at the sleeves, instead of in several patches requiring sewing up. A real mixed bag--you should check it out of your library first. It may or may not be your cup of tea. |
