Book Description

Answer Book (Storey) October 1, 2005
Every avid knitter has faced this dilemma: deep into a project at midnight, just trying to finish one more row, and, then . . . oh no, a dropped stitch three rows back! Help! If only there was a 24-hour hotline to answer every question a knitter might encounter. Well, now there is, with The Knitting Answer Book . The expert authors, Margaret Radcliffe and Edie Eckman, leave no question unanswered, no quandry unaddressed. Each book contains detailed, illustrated answers to literally hundreds of questions, from the common to the more unusual:

• Are certain needles better for certain yarns?
• What if I dropped a stitch several rows back?
• Why do my edges tend to curl up?
• Can you use a different weight yarn than the pattern calls for?
• What can I do to keep my yarns from tangling up?
• Oops, I see my ribbing is way too tight. Now what?

Covering the whole range of situations a beginner is likely to face, along with the problems that may arise for those working more advanced patterns, this Answer Book will help knitters and crocheters of all levels. Each book is packaged in a small, take-along trim size, in a friendly-to-use Q&A format, and belongs in the bag of every knitter. Available 24/7, The Knitting Answer Book is always open, ready for yarn lovers to browse and consult to their heart’s content.

I have been waiting for someone to finally review this book, but I gave up and ordered it. So here I go with a quick review. I was looking for something to throw in my knitting bag, and since I have the big Vouge knitting book I decided to go with a completely different type of book. The Knitting Answer Book fits the bill. It has a Q & A formatting, a bit unusual, but some of the questions are straight out of my own mouth. The book is divided into the following 13 chapters: Casting On, The Basics, Binding Off, Tools, Yarn, Reading Patterns, Pattern Stitches, Circular Knitting, Color, Shaping, Fitting, Finishing, and Embellishments. I was mostly interested in the Finishing chapter, it has helpful hints on blocking and sewing, which are my problem areas.
Most of the info probably won't be new to a well seasoned knitter, but if you like reading about knitting in general, and like to learn little new tricks, this might be the book for you. The only thing I don't like about the book is that the binding is a bit rigid, and hard to prop open. 4.5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you REALLY want to ask, February 9, 2006
This review is from: The Knitting Answer Book: Solutions to Every Problem You'll Ever Face; Answers to Every Question You'll Ever Ask (Perfect Paperback)
Even though I am a seasoned knitter, I love this book. It is easy to slip into any bag and the solutions are very easy to understand with diagrams. It is almost like having an expert right in your pocket. Casting on, binding off, pattern reading, colors, shaping, basics and more all packed into this 386 page book. Be sure to add this one to your knitting library.

I am an experienced knitter and somewhat questioned whether this book would be worthwhile for me. I am delighted! Its small enough to fit in anyone's knitting bag. It has a very durable binding that you can open all the way without cracking the book's spine. It has a lot of information and easily read diagrams. There is enough basic information for beginners, but I learned a few things the first time I read. For example, it explains and diagrams how to pick up a dropped stitch in the cast on row whether you use long tail or cable cast on. I always thought I had to start all over. If you're knitting with 200 or 300 stitches, it saves a lot of time. Highly recommeded.
