Not for traditional knitters,
By A. Reader (Boise, Idaho United States) - See all my reviews

I thought this might be fun, but was severely disappointed in the quality of the projects. I give it high marks for creativity, but I'm not sure why anyone would want a knitted thong. The patterns have been submitted by knitters from all over, who are being published unpaid, so I also commend them for their generosity. The problem is that being able to knit without a pattern doesn't really mean one is a "designer." There's a bizarre Christmas stocking where the foot isn't even as wide as the leg, several sock patterns with no resemblance to a human foot whatsoever, and just very novice designs in general. Several of the patterns extend 2 days, so there aren't even 365 patterns. I'm returning mine.

My enthusiasm is second-hand-crafted, but I can tell you that my wife loves this calendar.
She was a little wary when I gave it to her, because she has the excellent perpetual stich patterns calendar and others with stitching patterns rather than projects on each date. Those are great in themselves, but she really wasn't up for another one. This calendar has project patterns and not only a large number for traditional sweater making, but also a sizeable collection of diverse and unusual items to broaden the repertoire and suggest gift items for many occasions. The color is exciting, photos are outstanding and the instructions are fine even a few challenges, and the dates are accurate! Just to pick a nit, there are fewer than 365 patterns since a couple of complex instruction sets required the space of consecutive dates. That said, let's put the thought behind us. This publication makes HER happy, and that makes me happy.

Value far exceeds the price,

Although there are some projects I would never knit in a million years, there are also plenty of great ideas for intermediate knitters. There are many patterns for scarves, hats, socks, bags, and items that will help you use up your yarn stash. I like to have at least one small project going to give me a break from a larger project, and this calendar has more than enough ideas. (I had the 2006 calendar and saved over half the patterns for myself, giving the others away.) The page size makes them easy to take along in a project bag. Photos are in full color and charts are clear.

This year's calender was nothing but a bunch of free patterns I could have gotten off the internet. Do something with the quality of paper it is too flimsy. I'd like it to be a flip calender.

Disappointing patterns,

I had the 2006 version of this calendar last year, which yielded many patterns I could use, so I was looking forward to the '07 one. What a let-down... the patterns are of pretty poor quality. The first one of the year clearly requires a circular needle but does not say so, and as I skimmed through I saw a few other details that seemed wrong or misleading. I flipped through the whole year and found about four patterns I might like to make. There seems to be a few duplicate patterns in here too. Most of the patterns just seem ugly to me, and there really is nothing to get excited about. It is as if it had been put together by a different set of people than the 2006 one. You can find far better patterns for free at yarn companies' own web-sites.

Yes, the knitted thong previously mentioned is not my bag, but that is certainly not representative of what types of patterns are in this calendar. Do I love every pattern in the calendar? Heck no, but that doesn't mean it is a complete write off. There is a nice variety of sweaters, lots of socks, bags, mittens, hats, baby/child items and some random accessories. I would think that there is a nice bit of variety where most people could find at least a few patterns they are interested in knitting. I did find a couple of patterns that I know are posted online for free . . . I guess I just look at the price (I think I got mine for $9) and consider how much money I would spend on books/patterns to get the same amount of patterns. Sure a few go over a couple of days, but there are more than 200 patterns here. And really, how many pattern books do you come across where you love every single pattern? I think this calendar is designed more for the beginner/intermediate knitter and is not a bad selection for the price and I, personally, am looking forward to knitting more than a few of the projects. The only complaint I have regarding this calendar would be that the difficulty levels of the projects are not rated.

This is such a great calendar. Such interesting projects. I know that I won't knit every one of them but the ones I really like I rip off and put into a notebook for later use. Such a great idea. I'm going to be buying one every year from now on!

Great Calendar!,
This review is from: Knitting Calendar 2007 (Calendar)
I think that this is a great calendar. I seen from some of the previous reviewers that they think that this is not for the traditional knitter...You know what, I don't want to know how to make blankets and scarves. I want something that is new and different and this has a lot of them! Some of the patterns I would never use, but hey, I figure, I will use more of them than not.
And no, it isn't just a combination of free patterns. I know of 3 of them that are from a website where you would actually pay for the patterns and they are very popular. I'm sure that there are a lot more as well.

The 2007 calendar is a vast improvement over previous years. The printing is a good quality, and pictures and instructions are clear. Far fewer amateurish items. More things I'd actually knit.
