The subtitle tells it all: this is a book of 40 cute patterns for babies' and kids' knitted footwear. Originally published in Germany (Für kleine Füsse stricken), the book contains patterns by talented sock designers whose names may not be immediately recognized by U.S. knitters. None of the designers are identified on the individual pattern pages, but the copyright page explains that the patterns on specific pages are by Nadja Brandt, Coats LLC, Friederike Pfund, Mathilde Putra, Barbara Sander, Lilja Sommer, Helga Spitz, and Stephanie van der Linden.

Van der Linden's two patterns are "High Speed Chase" (anklets in size 9-12 months with big intarsia hearts or stars on the top of the foot), and "Dino Alert" (slippers in size 2-3 years with sewn-on toothed ridges running from ankle to toe). Other fun patterns are Pfund's "Mini-Harlequin" (felted slippers in size 2-3 years with jester's bells), "A Cossack on Tour" (felted slippers in size 2-3 years with multicolored, beaded, side tassels), and "Off to the Playing Field" (felted slippers in size 2-3 years that look like little laced tennis shoes).

Of course there are lots of patterns for booties (including sizes 0-3 months and 0-6 months), and for little socks (including sizes 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-9 months, 6-12 months, 12-18 months, 18-24 months, and 2-3 years). The patterns are clearly labeled as easy, intermediate, and experienced. Because these are such small projects, new knitters will probably want to tackle even the experienced patterns, which use Fair Isle, intarsia, and textured stitches.

The full-color photographs of the babies and children modeling the finished designs are quite charming (although not ethnically diverse).

Personally, I think the layout and the pics are the best part of this book. It does have some very nice patterns and it is well worth the little I paid for it.
