About the Author

Kristi Porter is an author, designer, technical editor, andteacher. In addition to authoring Knitting for Dogs, herwork has been featured in the Knitgrrl series, the BigGirl Knits series, No Sheep For You, and KnitWit. She is a frequent contributor to Knitty.com and hasbeen a part of that online magazine since its start in 2002.
Kristi doesn’t remember learning to knit as a child, but shecaptured the basics and an enthusiasm for the craft from hermother, her aunt, and her grandmother. She began her first projectsas a designer and a knitter, realizing only later that noteveryone designed their own patterns. Though her first attemptswere boxy and oversized (thank goodness it was the ’80s!),once she grasped the importance of gauge, she was on her way tocreating wearable designs. She began approaching the craft in aserious way in the late ’90s and learned how to read andwrite patterns in order to share her designs with others.
As a knitting instructor, Kristi teaches students at all levels andages. Getting feedback about what knitters want to knit, what theyenjoy, and what they find difficult has given her a strong sense ofwhat knitters need to know. She delights in helping her studentscreate their own patterns to suit their own needs and senses offashion.

One of the many things that I LOVE about this book is that while it is great for beginners - with many good graphics and descriptions of stitches and finishing etc - it is absolutely fantastic for those of us who aspire to get past a rigid pattern and want to try and create our own designs. It is very clearly thought out. Instructions, hints and tips aplenty. It genuinely does have something for everybody. What's more it's written in a fun and quirky way. Who'd have thought about using liquorice as a yarn ;-) As I say "I love it!"Knitting Patterns For Dummies (For Dummies (Sports & Hobbies))

If you are teaching yourself, as I am, you will find this helpful. There is a lot of good information, but not necessarily things that aren't available elsewhere. The benefit of this book is what the "For Dummies" books are best known for...helping you to formulate the question that you need answered, when you don't know enough to know where to start looking. An essential if you are teaching yourself.

Knitwear designer Kristi Porter presents Knitting Patterns for Dummies, a worthy addition to the exemplary "For Dummies" series of guides designed to make their subject matter thoroughly accessible to beginners. Chapters address how to choose the right yarn and needles, common stitches and pattern shapes, how to measure one's gauge, read a pattern, and understand garment sizing, proper care of completed knitted creations, and much more. A handful of color plates and an assortment of black-and-white diagrams illustrate this step-by-step guide, enthusiastically recommended as a top-notch self-teaching resource.

I found this book to be very useful in reviewing and learning new knitting stitches. The directions were easy to follow and were accompanied with illustrations. I recommend this book for beginners as well as those who have not knitted in a few years and are in need of a refresher course. The patterns given have easy to follow directions which incorporate many different stitches to give practice.

THe Kindle Version has the photos and diagrams right over top of the paragraphs, so much of it was unusable. Amazon refunded quickly, but I'd recommend getting the actual paper version, because there is something wrong with the formatting in the Kindle version.

I am a fairly experienced knitter (not to say entirely competent), but I found this book to be very informative, readable and inspiring. It explained several techniques that I never quite "got" before, and has inspired me to try a few new things.

My 10 year old actually uses this book more than I do. She likes it and it is easy to understand. There are plenty of ideas and patterns. Some are easy and some are hard.
