About the Author

Kristi Porter is an author, designer, technical editor, and teacher. In addition to authoring Knitting for Dogs, her work has been featured in the Knitgrrl series, the Big Girl Knits series, No Sheep For You, and Knit Wit. She is a frequent contributor to Knitty.com and has been a part of that online magazine since its start in 2002.
Kristi doesn’t remember learning to knit as a child, but she captured the basics and an enthusiasm for the craft from her mother, her aunt, and her grandmother. She began her first projects as a designer and a knitter, realizing only later that not everyone designed their own patterns. Though her first attempts were boxy and oversized (thank goodness it was the ’80s!), once she grasped the importance of gauge, she was on her way to creating wearable designs. She began approaching the craft in a serious way in the late ’90s and learned how to read and write patterns in order to share her designs with others.
As a knitting instructor, Kristi teaches students at all levels and ages. Getting feedback about what knitters want to knit, what they enjoy, and what they find difficult has given her a strong sense of what knitters need to know. She delights in helping her students create their own patterns to suit their own needs and senses of fashion.

One of the many things that I LOVE about this book is that while it is great for beginners - with many good graphics and descriptions of stitches and finishing etc - it is absolutely fantastic for those of us who aspire to get past a rigid pattern and want to try and create our own designs. It is very clearly thought out. Instructions, hints and tips aplenty. It genuinely does have something for everybody. What's more it's written in a fun and quirky way. Who'd have thought about using liquorice as a yarn ;-) As I say "I love it!"Knitting Patterns For Dummies (For Dummies (Sports & Hobbies))

If you are teaching yourself, as I am, you will find this helpful. There is a lot of good information, but not necessarily things that aren't available elsewhere. The benefit of this book is what the "For Dummies" books are best known for...helping you to formulate the question that you need answered, when you don't know enough to know where to start looking. An essential if you are teaching yourself.

Knitwear designer Kristi Porter presents Knitting Patterns for Dummies, a worthy addition to the exemplary "For Dummies" series of guides designed to make their subject matter thoroughly accessible to beginners. Chapters address how to choose the right yarn and needles, common stitches and pattern shapes, how to measure one's gauge, read a pattern, and understand garment sizing, proper care of completed knitted creations, and much more. A handful of color plates and an assortment of black-and-white diagrams illustrate this step-by-step guide, enthusiastically recommended as a top-notch self-teaching resource.

THe Kindle Version has the photos and diagrams right over top of the paragraphs, so much of it was unusable. Amazon refunded quickly, but I'd recommend getting the actual paper version, because there is something wrong with the formatting in the Kindle version.

I found this book to be very useful in reviewing and learning new knitting stitches. The directions were easy to follow and were accompanied with illustrations. I recommend this book for beginners as well as those who have not knitted in a few years and are in need of a refresher course. The patterns given have easy to follow directions which incorporate many different stitches to give practice.

I am a fairly experienced knitter (not to say entirely competent), but I found this book to be very informative, readable and inspiring. It explained several techniques that I never quite "got" before, and has inspired me to try a few new things.

I am a new knitter and I thought this book would help... well I am sure its helpful to some people but I am more of a hands-on person and needs lots of pictures of which this had but they werent very good in explaining. I have bought these types of books in the past of other things including crochet however I dont recommend this to noobies. If you already know how to knit its likely a good read but not for a starter. Additionally I was not fond of the projects in the book, its easier to find better ones online for free with much better instructions and lessons.

I bought this used so it was a little loved, but still very nice and has so many cute patterns! I made my niece the baby sweater and my sister loves it! It was easy to follow the patterns and I am very glad I bought this book.
I do have to reference videos online to learn new techniques, because I have a hard time following pictures to learn new knitting techniques!
