Book Description

January 16, 2008 Twelve Sweaters One Way
A dozen colorful and creative sweater designs made with one basic shape.

This book of easy-to-knit charted patterns features 12 sweaters made with one simple shape and method of construction. Working with a saddle-style construction as each garmentÆs foundation, readers can create an assortment of unique sweaters for men, women, and children. Each sweater features one or more innovative design variations, including different neckline treatments; band treatments; stitch patterning and textural details; gauge variations; yarn variations; colorwork and patterning; and an array of finishing details. All sweaters directions are written for garments with sizing that ranges from X Small to XX Large. The appendix helps machine knitters adapt the method so they can knit the sweaters by machine, too.

  • This is the only book on the market to feature variations on this classic garment form -- made popular with the traditional Irish ôfishermanö sweaters, which are prized for their comfortable fit.
  • This book teaches readers both to knit and design as they master -- and modify -- one simple silhouette to create twelve unique garments.
  • Beginner knitters will find detailed instruction to create twelve successful garments; more advanced knitters will be inspired to create sophisticated variations by mixing and matching textures and techniques.
  • This book is the second in the series, Twelve Sweaters One Way, which features a dozen design variations on simple knit shapes for men, women, and children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well crafted and complete explanations, October 18, 2008

I am an intermediate knitter in my skill set, but only a beginner when it comes to knitting garments. My first garment was the Einstein Coat by Sally Melville in The Knitting ExperienceThe Knitting Experience: Book 1: The Knit Stitch (The Knitting Experience). So I was really thrilled to find another book that offers a similar type of pattern like a saddle knit.
Knitting Saddle Style had excellent clear directions and photos. Really a nice knitting book for garments.
The reason I am giving it a 4 star rating is that I am not overly crazy about the styles--they are a little plain. This was disappointing because from the cover pictures I expected the patterns would be more exciting and hip. But for basic sweaters they are ok. I imagine that once I learn the concept, I can create my own patterns with more texture and style.

All stitch patterns are in new-type charts. I'm one of those old school knitters who can't make head-nor-tail of these charts, so use is limited to shaping and providing my own written-out stitch patterns from the photos. If you grew up with charts, then it's a really nice book for you.

I love this book! I just bought the yarn to make a sweater for myself and another one for my son. Very easy to follow and the saddle style particularly fits those people with wide shoulders without the feeling of being bound tightly.

First Sentence:
Although the name "saddle style" conjures up images of horses and cowboys and other things Western (and despite the fun I've had naming these sweaters), the term actually refers to a specific way of constructing the shoulders of the sweater. Read the first page
