The Good
This book is receiving 4 stars because of the most important aspect of the book, the content. The sections on creating your resume and on how to answer tough interview questions are extremely helpful. After reading those sections you will realize just how many mistakes you have been making throughout the process of searching for a job. The resume section provides a guide that not only targets your resume for your desired career, but also helps you put your career goals into greater focus so that you are confident talking about them with anybody. This is very important because you never know when a conversation about your career goals will turn into a job lead. The sections the focus on common interview questions doesn't just give you a stock answer to use, but goes into detail about what the interviewer is trying to accomplish with the question. Once you know why the question is being asked, it is much easier to remember how you should be answering.

The Bad
Although the content of this book is great, there are some drawbacks. Whoever edited this book should be fired. The same sections appear in multiple chapters, and there is quite a lot of overlap. These overlapping sections are not there to reinforce a point either, they clearly stem from the book being revised multiple times without proper editing. There are also a few spots where the book seems to veer in a direction that doesn't match the content of the rest of the chapter. Again I think this is a result of content being misplaced due to poor editing. Also, there are quite a few references the the website for the book. [...] In almost every section there is a plug that tells you to go to the website for a template or to read more information on a topic. Don't bother.

As I'm beginning my search to re-enter the corporate job market after several years running my own business, I found myself wondering how to organize my efforts.

What I will tell you is simply this. Hold onto your hat, buckle up and get ready for a reality check. This book speaks the truth. It does not mince words. It does not tell you it's going to be "OK." It does not give you false hope. What it does offer is a candid and honest approach to getting yourself noticed by employers.

Once I took a day to wrap my head around the book's plan(s), I started to implement them as they were laid out. I'm already seeing results that were not forming with my earlier efforts.

Are you ready? If so, crack open this book and get ready to get back to work!

Best,

Don Zukas

Having been out of the interviewing game for over 3 years now, when it came time for me to make a career move, I was clueless as where to start, what to do, who to talk to, etc. This book was recommended to me by a good friend and I have not been disappointed!

This book does a great job of discussing the who, what, where, when and why's of interviewing and gives you perspectives from not only the interviewee but also the interviewer, which is something I've never considered before - "What is this person expecting of me/what are they thinking of me right now?" Now that I have more insight into things like this, I feel like I'll be more prepared when the big day comes.

I kind of hopped around the book a little, based on which categories of job-searching/interviewing I needed to brush up on first. But this book, hands down, is the best tool I've come across in my search for a new career. Covers everything from what to say to what to wear to follow-ups and more. I highly recommend this book!

I had borrowed the 2012 version from the library and loved it so much decided to purchase a copy. When I saw the 2013 version was actually cheaper than 2012, I bought it. It arrived exactly as described and I have already had 2 interviews. Must have book for any job seekers; highly recommended!

I have been using this book since 1990. Every great job I ever got was due, in part, to the info in this book. If you are looking for work, or to change jobs, you must have this book.

This is the best book today on the job search process and interview preparation. It describes each phase of the job search process and how you incorporate these phases into a career management strategy. Each part of the job search process is explained clearly and thoroughly. The book contains practical strategies for each phase to improve your chances of success. There are more strategies discussed here than in any other job search publication.

My husband bought the 1991 addition of Knock `em Dead and went on to creating his own business when he was laid off. In the last 20+ years I've used this book with great success. We paid 8 dollars back in 1991 but the payback is not quantifiable; I'm sure it has paid back at least 1,000 times the price of the book.

Just the one tip the "Executive Briefing" was a dramatic improvement. Here are some quotes from hiring managers about the executive briefing:

Someone that hired me . . . "I'm going to use this executive briefing next time I'm looking for a job"

The manager of a hiring manager "You get an A+ for effort ". . . talking about the executive briefing. This recommendation got me an interview when they did not want to even consider someone who didn't live in the preferred area.

At several interviews I've heard comments that this (Executive Briefing) is so helpful.

So when I was recently laid off, I bought the newest edition of Martin's book. Martin is still giving the best advice in the business. I just attended his seminar on networking. Once again his advice is dead on and extremely motivating.

(Update one month later)- I just got a job that was perfect for me. Once again - Thank you Martin!
