I originally read and used an earlier edition of this book at least 15 or 20 years ago, and upon my recent job search I used it again, this time the updated 2014 edition. It remains the definitive book on the subject of Getting the Offer.

I had my most recent job for almost a decade before being phased out on a budget cut, and upon returning to the world of job hunting and interviewing, I found myself rusty. At first I tried to wing my way through my first few phone interviews, relying on just my experience, and I found myself rambling and struggling for crisp responses to the questions being presented. I realized I needed a refresher, so I picked up this updated edition of Yate's book. It was EXACTLY what I needed.

This book puts you in the mind and chair of the interviewer, helping you understand his/her purpose and motivations in order to deliver the right responses. There is also still no better book that presents "Great Answers to Tough Interview Questions" than this one...it doesn't give you a word-for-word script (which would only prove to be obvious if you tried to respond that way in an interview), but instead it sets your FRAME OF MIND with the right ways to craft those responses in a natural way.

I especially appreciated how it prepared me for the "behavioral" interview style, where interviewers ask you NOT "how would you hypothetically handle this situation?", but instead "Provide actual EXAMPLES, ACTIONS YOU TOOK, and RESULTS" of given situations...a much tougher interviewing approach.

Yate does it again... Providing up-to-date straight-forward, clear-speak insight and strategic recommendations that supports job seekers during this difficult economic time. He presents thoughtful and often times humorous antidotes that keep you engage. This book has been invaluable during my job search. **Bonus - Tip of The Day** Recently a friend introduced me to Yate's LinkedIn Group - Knock em Dead Secrets and Strategies - check it out. Good discussions by many and often times Yate offers webinars. 'Pass it forward!'

This book served as an invaluable resource in my transition from academic to "real" job market.
First, I used Target Job Description (TJD) exercise to understand, which skills I need to have/advertise and which topics are hot.
Second, I worked through the behavioral interview part, writing a short story in response to each question.
Third, I learnt to write strong cover letters, which get noticed.
Fourth, well... I got a job!
