3.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for job seekers
I have the '96 Edition of this same book and have used it so many times. I purchased the 2005 edition thinking I would be gaining more information. Although what's in there has been updated, the sections I referred to most in the '96 edition were the same. However as a first time user I'd highly recommend this resource.

I highly recommend this great book for anyone looking for a job. I was unemployed for 2 years and getting interviews for only mediocre jobs and no offers. I bought this book and saw the mistakes I was making. The best jobs aren't even advertised and I was giving all the wrong answers at interviews. I took Martin Yates' advice and got 3 interviews in 1 week at great companies. His advice on what to say, and especially what not to say, gave me the confidence to handle myself better at interviews. After 2 years of unemployment, I finally landed my dream job in my preferred field. I will definately keep his book on hand and I advise anyone looking for a first time job or a better job to read it. Thank you Martin Yates!!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE Book on Getting THAT Job!!!, March 11, 2005
I am ordering this latest version to just have it nearby when I advise fellow job seekers on how to get hired.

While I am very happy in the job I have now, I have used Yate's book twice. The first time was a decade ago when I pulled a much older version of this book off my parents bookshelf and landed my first job.

2 jobs later, I was making 40k in my own business with 45k in expenses. I sold my business and used Yate's book to land my next job starting at 125k.

It's just that simple - This book is that good!!! Yate's techniques for interview preparation and actual interview taking are inspired and easy to understand.

I wowed my potential employer with my abilities and landed a salary far beyond my expectations - and it is a direct result of Yate's book.

If you want a better job paying top $, buy this book and follow it whether your making 5,6,or 7 figures!

This is a great book for anyone who is looking for a job or planning to make a career change. It is a great resource for those who are looking for advice and insights into interviews questions. The highlight of the book is answers to tough interview questions. I very strongly recommend the book for anyone who is actively looking for a job. It is equally helpful to the novice job seeker and the experienced job seeker. I have recommended this book to over 500 graduating students over the years and the feedback from everyone has been very positive.

4.0 out of 5 stars What every job seeker really needs!, November 27, 2006
By
This review is from: Knock 'em Dead: The Ultimate Job Search Guide (Knock 'em Dead: The Ultimate Job-Seekers' Handbook) (Paperback)
A job counselor for more than 20 years, Martin Yate writes for all of us, college student to CEO. In Knock 'em Dead 2007, he lavishes us with in-depth step-by-step instructions on every aspect of the job search process from resume writing and networking to answering the most probing interview questions.

Its 339 pages contain nuggets of information and invaluable advice that set the job seeker on the path to success. Yate organizes the information into five sections. The Well-Stocked Briefcase covers timing, resumes, networking and tactics. Part 2, Getting the Word Out, covers strategies for landing phone interviews, then face-to-face meetings, dressing right, body language and good first impressions. We've all been stumped by tricky, even underhanded interview questions and Yate shares powerful honest answers to them in Part 3. Stressful interviews to strange venues, Yate has techniques for mastering it all including that indelible last impression as you exit your interview.

Part 4, Finishing Touches, advises how to handle follow up, turn rejection into opportunity, and negotiate when the offer arrives. Yate even counsels how to ace psychological tests and handle multiple job offers. Part 5, How-tos of the delicate process of searching for a job while still employed, and dealing with finances during tough times.

The author ends with a handy answer index to hundreds of interview questions. His writing style is concise, graceful and at times, humorous. He has it all: excellent organization, impressive credentials and superb command of the subject. Described as a career strategist and public speaker with thirty years experience in the career management world, his chapters made me itch to go out and look for a job whether I needed one or not.

This appeared to be his 21st updated edition of the book. More than five million Knock 'em Dead books have sold already.

Armchair Interviews highly recommends Knock 'em Dead 2007 for anyone who wants to find the right job and find it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars An indispensable resource for job-seekers, June 21, 2007
By
Ironblayde (Omaha, Nebraska, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Knock 'em Dead: The Ultimate Job Search Guide (Knock 'em Dead: The Ultimate Job-Seekers' Handbook) (Paperback)
I'm a pretty intelligent guy, but I'm not a very effective speaker, so I have trouble selling myself. When faced with a personal question that I'm not expecting, I often find it difficult to compose an answer on the spot and deliver it without stumbling over my words, and without awkward pauses as I search for the best way to phrase something. I also don't have much experience with how the business world works. Hence, as recently as a few weeks ago, a job interview seemed like the stuff of nightmares.

Thankfully, I found this book. Its comprehensive advice is as useful as it is easy to understand, for every aspect of the job search. Knock 'em Dead answered my questions about how to identify the best job opportunities, how to craft my letters of introduction to catch an employer's interest, and most importantly, how to handle any interview situation smoothly and confidently. Within an amazingly short time, I got myself a better job than I would have believed possible for someone with my background, and at a better salary than I had hoped for.

Job interviews still make me nervous, but to be honest, it's the anticipation more than the actual process that bothers me now. Once the interview starts, I find myself actually quite comfortable, because I know that I've prepared thoroughly for whatever's coming. Even if you can't necessarily anticipate every last question an interviewer will hit you with, you can certainly come close, and the more prepared you are, the easier it is to deal with the few unknowns.

I don't doubt that I would have been tripped up several times in my job interviews had I not read this book first. With it, I was never unsure of myself, never came out of an interview thinking, "If only I had done this differently." I can't recommend it enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Godsend for Job Seekers, December 2, 2006
Yate's books about interviews are the ideal companion books to Bolles' annual "What Color is Your Parachute." This book not only provides good verbiage for difficult questions during an interview; it also provides a checklist of body language and the rationale for using same. It helps decode certain nonverbal behaviors, e.g. putting one's hands behind their head causes one to appear smug and arrogant.

Yate also provides a check list of appropriate attire and stresses the importance of good hygiene and good grooming. He cultivates a professional appearance, yet writes with a sense of humor, e.g. "nobody appreciates a Monday morning quarterback," in re offering advice to an interviewer as a moot point.

An excellent tool and one every job hunter should keep at close hand. While on an interview, you might want to keep a copy of this in your briefcase so you can refer to it as a refresher prior to your interview.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't do better, June 8, 2006

Yate has such a grasp of the mysteries of a successful job search that he has probably forgotten more than most experts know. His approaches are sound and his suggestions are on target. Yate, simply, is the authority in the job-hunt space and he shares it all with readers in Knock 'em Dead 2006.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best Interview Book Available, August 22, 2006
Yate has never once given me bad advice. I follow the instructions in his book almost to the letter, and I have had nothing but success in both interviewing and salary negoiations.

His advice is right on target and he knows how to help people land jobs. Buy all three of his books, read them and follow his advice. It will be the best money you will have ever spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best job-unting book on the market, June 30, 2005
This book provided me with more real world solutions to potential issues than any other job-hunting book I have encountered. The questions discussed were some of the same ones I was asked during my recent job interviews; knowing what to say (and what NOT to say) played a major part in my newly acquired position away from The Company from Hell.

Furthermore, it's not simply the answers to the questions which makes this book so strong but aspects you will find in no other book. Planning your job search, what to wear, small talk, etc; all of these play a huge part of the job search but too many resources will go directly to the interview questions and proposed answers while ignoring everything else.

You will not be disappointed in your purchase of this book.
