Sean O'Casey is one of Ireland's most beloved, playwrights, but he was also a noted memoirist. Written in a Joycean blur of impressions, his first volume of autobiography, "I Knock at the Door," is one of the best evocations of childhood I've read. Dublin in the last years of the 19th century seethed with political and religious contention and young Johnny Casside (as O'Casey calls himself) grew up in the middle of it. The boy was cursed with a painful eye condition that virtually blinded him for years. "This dung-like heap of ignorance" is one of his kinder descriptions of his joyless upbringing as a Protestant in a Catholic country, wearing shoes soled with cardboard, beset by bullies, caned mercilessly at school, badly fed and inadequately sheltered in a cramped little hovel. Yet he finds joy in life and grows up to communicate it triumphantly. O'Casey's memories aren't so funny as Frank McCourt's in "Angela's Ashes, but they're heartfelt and inspiring.
