2.0 out of 5 stars Makes You Feel Good - About Yourself
I bought this book when I became unexpectedly pregnant myself, and was surprised that someone would not only admit, but not actually realize how much of an immature and irresponsible child they are. Yes, parts of it were funny and honest. Yes, I could identify with some things she was feeling. But I was also angered at most of it. I worked nine months (as a waitress)...

2.0 out of 5 stars Makes You Feel Good - About Yourself, December 28, 2007
This review is from: Knocked Up : Confessions of an Unlikely Mother-to-Be (Paperback)
I worked nine months (as a waitress) of my pregnancy. She started her maternity leave early because she could "no longer sit at a computer", at home. Her main concern about smoking was that people would judge her. She scheduled a cesarean because she didn't feel like getting a pap smear. She hired a nanny WHILE she was on maternity leave. I am almost ten years younger than the author was at the time of her pregnancy, and she made me feel like I am doing one heck of a job as a parent. That's the best thing about this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars makes joan crawford look sympathetic, March 21, 2005
This review is from: Knocked Up : Confessions of an Unlikely Mother-to-Be (Paperback)
I seriously cannot believe that anyone not related to Ms. Eckler would give this piece of crap more than one star. As a new mother, reading her newspaper column regarding pregnancy made me so incredulous that someone could actually be so unrealistic and lacking in any maternal fibre that I cancelled my subscription. This woman cannot write. She is incredibly vain, shallow and selfish to the point that she requires therapy (and not the retail kind). A total waste of time and money. Yuck.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is so terrible it defies description, June 2, 2004
This review is from: Knocked Up : Confessions of an Unlikely Mother-to-Be (Paperback)
I have never written an amazon review though I am an amazon addict. I felt compelled to write a review of this book because I feel this book is an indictment of the entire Canadian publishing industry, the Canadian media, and the utterly self-important and know-nothing marketing scene in Toronto, which has promoted the bejesus out of a book which is as patently awful as the sky is blue on a clear day. By all objective standards, Miss Eckler cannot write or even express clear thoughts. I will not comment on her many pathologies, which are evident in this book (which I received as a present from a naive but well-meaning friend oblivious to this woman's monstrous idiocy).

1.0 out of 5 stars How Horrifying, June 2, 2004
This review is from: Knocked Up : Confessions of an Unlikely Mother-to-Be (Paperback)
I have read cat calendars that are funnier, better-written and more informative. I am a man, and I am horrified. Is this how women view pregnancy and childbirth?

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book!, February 21, 2005
This review is from: Knocked Up : Confessions of an Unlikely Mother-to-Be (Paperback)
I was quite looking forward to this book as I read Ms.Ecklers columns on a regular basis. I'm also a new mother so I thought this might be timely and interesting. I could not be more wrong. Yes, Ms. Eckler can write, no doubt about that. But the reason I found this book a waste of time and money was that the main character (her) is a person who is vain, selfish and shallow. I think we are supposed to like and be sympathetic with her but by the end of the book I detested her. This is not a person I would want to be friends with. One thing is very clear - the size of her behind is more important to her than her child. Her Fiance, family, Cute single guy,her friends, nanny and night nurse exist only to serve her needs. Don't buy this book and stroke her ego and make it any larger than it is. I never write reviews but in this case I felt compelled to not let anyone waste their money!

1.0 out of 5 stars The sound of one hand clapping, June 3, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Knocked Up : Confessions of an Unlikely Mother-to-Be (Paperback)
I'm preggers and my husband bought this for me for my birthday - I would have rather had a tub of ice cream. This book is poorly written and completely nonlinear, pretty much like her regular stuff in the Post. It was supposed to be "very funny", but I just found it cloying and self-absorbed.

Don't buy it. Don't even take it out from the library.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm not sure, May 31, 2004

This review is from: Knocked Up : Confessions of an Unlikely Mother-to-Be (Paperback)
While this book made me think a little about the process of unwanted pregnancy, the entire 250+ page book could be summed up in five words: "Does my ass look fat?".

Not exactly the most feminist or introspective of moms-to-be, Eckler still manages to capture the sheer bewilderment of pregnancy. Unfortunately, what might be funny in person often comes across as vapid, shallow, self-absorbed or lazy, and I found myself wondering how much I cared about her size zero pants or her stealthy cigarettes. Things really came into focus when, halfway through the book, Kate Hudson becomes pregant. Eckler rejoices: finally, a celebrity she can emulate!

Still, there are moment of wit and insight, and "Knocked Up" was clearly meant as an answer to the motherhood-is-joy brigade. No matter how much weight she gains, how many cigarettes she deprives herself of, how many Big Macs she eats, Eckler grudgingly admits that her baby is beautiful, and being mother might not be so bad after all.

1.0 out of 5 stars This Book is Gross, May 28, 2004
This review is from: Knocked Up : Confessions of an Unlikely Mother-to-Be (Paperback)
i am a new mother and someone gave this to me as a mothers day present. i threw it out. it is not funny, not well-written, and disgusting. the author doesn't deserve the gift of a child. and i feel so sorry for her baby having to grow up, read this and realize what an inconvenience she was to her self-absorbed, shallow, vain, childish, disloyal, mean-spirited, brainless mother. the poor baby. there is chick lit, and then there is crap. this is crap.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy me!, May 28, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Knocked Up : Confessions of an Unlikely Mother-to-Be (Paperback)
I glanced at the book in Chapters and stood there reading most of it. I was curious about Eckler's ability to write more than a column at a time and was quite disappointed in her writing style. She comes across as very self-absorbed, and not at all pleased about her blessings at having a healthy child. Complaining about being "fat" etc was really disappointing that she couldn't connect her body's changes to the joy of having a child.
