The Big Business of Counterfeiting,
By tgfabthunderbird (York, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Knockoff: A Novel (Hardcover)
I interviewed Bill Levy some years ago, when "Knockoff" was first put out. A very interesting interview, as Levy's book puts in novel form the counterfeiting business.
The story begins quickly with the deaths of a family, found to be due to counterfeit, or "knockoff" auto parts. It moves quickly, involving counterfeiting kingpins, businesspeople, and an international hit man. I recently ran into another person I knew that had read the book. We agreed that Levy was spotlighting a serious problem that goes beyond fake luggage, DVDs and the like. The character development was a bit thin, and we don't learn really why some of the people got involved in it the way they did, but again the main thrust was how widespread the problem is. Levy also felt the government and consumer groups are not doing enough to deal with the problem. Makes you want to think very carefully the next time you buy a designer item. |
