I am impressed with this book and a little dissapointed. The book is filled with stars that look different and very neat. Also, the settings are wonderful and something you don't see everyday. The things I didn't like were the pictures of the quilts. The quilts are not real quilts but filled in with color. I guess I get more inspired by the real thing. And these quilts would take an exceptional amount of time to make. I didn't care for the layout of the directions either. I am glad that I purchased it for the different ideas.

This book does just what the author intended. It shows you a large variety of blocks and layouts, and inspires you to try your own layouts and color schemes, although you can certainly make the quilts just as Judy Martin shows them. Even my husband got into the act, saying he liked this or that layout, or suggesting a different color scheme.
I really like star blocks to begin with, so I really enjoyed finding a source showing so many variations, some good alternate blocks to go with them, and some traditional and not-so-traditional layouts. There are instructions for cutting each block in a variety of sizes. This allows you to plan a quilt with a few large blocks, which would highlight special prints or quilting, or a "scrappy" quilt with many smaller blocks, or anything in between.

I loved this one -- still do. Okay, I'm "particular" about my quilting books. I want them to be interesting, well organized, NOT DUPLICATE those I have already, and generally something that is inspiring. And you should know I was prepared to like Judy Martin's (I have a couple of hers -- with Marsha McCloskey in particular stands out in my mind)
And anyway, I received mine -- paid retail, and I don't "do that" very often. I was not disappointed. Not a bit. Sure, it might have been okay to see the blocks in fabric, but sometimes that becomes distracting. One great feature is the blocks themselves. I love stars but what I liked was that in addition to the larger one shown in color, there are at least two others showing color variations -- so if you're not tickled by the main one, you can see how the block might look if you swapped out the outside corners (from light, to dark for instance) It opens up the possibilities, or did for me. Please note there are instructions at the front of the book -- well illustrated mind you, but if you haven't made your first few blocks, you'll find it a bit overwhelming. Still, I'd say "buy the book" anyway, AND (if you're new to the world of quilting) another purchase should be The Quilters Ultimate Visual Guide: From A to Z-- Hundreds of Tips and Techniques for Successful Quiltmaking As an aside, if you order both here from AZ (versus used) shipping is free. Okay, so I'm thrifty. I like free shipping. Anyway, take a look-see for yourself. This one's a Keeper -- and no, you're not borrowing mine. I know better -- doubt seriously if any quilter would want to give it back once it's in her hands! Enjoy. Go ahead -- order today because you need a treat and Knockout is just that: a treat for quilters. :) And if she likes stars? hahahah. Watch her like you do your good scissors. ;)

I know this would be a great book, if I ever got it. It has been so long that I forgot I had even ordered it. Please follow up and tell me what happened to my order, or refund my money? Thanx, Marilyn Cordner
