Editorial Review

While it never quite achieves Muhammad Ali-like greatness, Knockout Kings 2000 is nonetheless an excellent boxing game for both the enthusiast and the casual gamer. Fifty boxing legends from the past and present are featured in this EA Sports title, along with world-famous arenas and TV-style coverage. In addition to being able to set up your own fights in the standard exhibition mode, you can play out nine of the greatest boxing matches in history in the game's classic mode. And for those interested in less realism and more pugilism, slugfest mode offers over-the-top, arcade-style boxing.

The real crowd pleaser here is Knockout Kings 2000's career mode. Choosing from a wide variety of options, you get to create your own custom boxer, who can fight his way to the top in career mode or participate in exhibition and slugfest matches. Before career fights, customized boxers can be improved by training, or playing various mini-games. (A memory card is required to save custom boxer data.)

What robs Knockout Kings 2000 of the championship belt is its unbalanced 3-D graphics. The boxers look great and move fluidly, but everything else appears flat and unfinished. Thankfully, fast game speed and responsive controls clamp down on the sightseeing, which is one sure-fire way to end up KO'd. --Joe Hon

Pros:

  • Can create your own custom boxer
  • Features realistic and arcade-style boxing
  • Fast game speed and responsive controls
  • Optional 1-button mode for those who don't want to memorize controls
Cons:
  • Except for the boxers, graphics aren't very pretty

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Fun I Had Since Punchout, December 4, 1999

This game has a great look, with Boxing Greats like classic Alli to contemporary stars like Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield. (not to metion the middle and lightweights) From judge Mills Lane to Caesars Palace, this game IS authenicity. Don't listen to the critics. This game has excellent play control and adequate challenge. The career mode is, admittedly, a bit easy. However, I would like to see the guy who wrote the staff review take on Alli with Spinks or Tua in Slugfest hard mode; not an easy proposition! I'm a big boxing fan and love quality video games. Buy KK 2000, its well worth the money of a Lewis-Holyfield pay-per-view event.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great when it comes to Slugfest, but stinks in Career, December 31, 2001

This could be a really great boxing game. Some of the best boxers in the world are featured, and the gameplay is excellent. That is until you get into the career mode.

Many of the players lose their skill when going into their careers, and the computer predetermines who will win the next fight. You could be beating the snot out of your opponent, while you give up little health, but he come's right back and KO's you, and the computer won't let you back up.

That's the major problem with this game. Other than that, I have no beef against it.
