5.0 out of 5 stars Took 2 hrs but I now love this game
I am the ultimate boxing videogame junkie. Ever since playing 4D Boxing (Still the best boxing game ever) on the PC I have been in search of a great console boxing game. This game is like EA sports is trying to take a back step from Knockout Kings 2000. I am the ultimate boxing videogame junkie. Ever since playing 4D Boxing (Still the best boxing game ever) on the PC I have been in search of a great console boxing game. After being repulsed by the original Knockout Kings, I was very pleasantly surprised by last year's version. The controls were much improved and the graphics much nicer. This year I was expecting greatness and at first was dissapointed. I forced myself to keep playing and all of a sudden things clicked and the game really began to impress me. The new Dynamic Punch Control seemed unrealistic because when you clicked on say a low left hook 3 times in a row the boxer would throw them even if you then switched to an uppercut. So you could throw a triple hook and at the time you are waiting for the follow-up uppercut to come your boxer is still throwing hooks. This took away from the realism since you did not feel complete control. Yet the more I played the better the timing got and all of a sudden I was hit with how great this new system is. You can now back your opponent against the ropes and land a rapid fired combination that keeps his head snapping back. It add a whole new dimension. What is even better is that it is enough of a different game from KO Kings 2000 that you now have 2 great boxing games.

4.0 out of 5 stars MIKE TYSON'S would like KNOCKOUT KINGS 2001, March 19, 2001

True this game is slower than 2000 and boxer move more like fast slugers but the crab style and free style are nice. Traning in SPARRING RING and having a CUTMAN and TRAINER in your corner to stop bleeding is good. MIKE TYSON should have been in this game with the BITING. Try the NEW ELLEGAL MOVE by pressing the following to EAR BITE L1+R1+Trangle+circle+x+square. Here is a list of new boxers.

FEMALE boxers CristyMartin,MiaSt.John,LuciaRijker,ReginaHalmich,Chevelle

Hallback,BelinaLaracuente,DeniseMorates,SumyaAnani.

HEAVY Weight boxers MuhamadAli,DavidTua,EarniShavers,FloydPatterson,KenNorton,Archie Moore,RockyMarciano,JoeLouis,SonnyListin,LennexLewis,Ingemar Johnsson,EvaderHolyfield,LarryHolmes,MichaelGrant,JoeFrazier,Jack Dempsey,ButterBead,FrankBruno.

MIDDLE Weight boxers HectorCamacho,PernelWhitaker,FernadoVargas,SugarRayRobinson,David Reid,IkeQuartey,ShaneMosley,BrocoMckart,RayLeonard,JakeLamotta,

MarvinHagler,VernoForest,RobertoDuran,OscarDeLaHoya,JulioCesar Chavez,RubinCarter,ObaCarr.

I do not know what Light weight fighters are in the game. Have some EAR BITING fun complements of tyson.

The boxers foot work is too slow and their arms look like they are about to snap off, sorry EA sports, this one just doesn't cut it.

I cant believe it ko kings 2k was so much better. I think the thing that did it for me was the lack of realism, I mean whe they punch the arms look like their about to fly out of their sockets. Also they dont even look like their boxing the boxers have no facial expression at all.
One thing that is cool is the Career mode thats the only reason this game even got two stars the thing is when u play the career mode its just a little to easy to beat, even the last fight i beat my first try. All i have to say is the game was very dissapointing and didnt show the potential of EA sports, sorry guys I just cant give this anymore than 2 stars.Adios!

1.0 out of 5 stars KO Kings BITES, December 13, 2000
This review is from: Knockout Kings 2001 for PS1 (Video Game)
This game made me want to throw the controller after 5 minutes of playing. The limp wristed slow-motion punching makes the boxers look like wimps. I recently purchased HBO Boxing and although it lacks some of the graphics, it plays WAY better than KO Kings. In KO Kings you can't punch and move at the same time. You can't block and move at the same time either. The "shove" button is too easy to accidentally hit... the list goes on. I was expecting way more from this game, but it's gameplay is nowhere near HBO Boxing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Try Playing The Game More., November 22, 2000

This is the the fellow from CA. who gave KO Kings 2001 only one star. I would not contest your review since you sound very knowledgable. I would anly ask that you play the game for a bit more and then write a second review. If you still hate it then so be it. I did see room for improvement as the frame rate does flicker. But still felt the gameplay truly improved the more I played it. I have been having a little tourney with the woman using Richer, Laraqurte and another lady and it really is fun. I find the defense has improved and combos while a bit off timed, are still great once you get the hang of it. One other complant I do have is that you cannot hold on like you could in last year's game. This is a big oversight that should be corrected next year.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the price, March 24, 2003

It may not be the best computer game ever written. There are some with more realism and better graphics, but what the heck it isn't all that expensive. My son and I are having a good time beating each other up.

There is one very cute thing in the program. EA put in a boxing stadium in Redwood Shores California where they are based. The funny thing is that there is no bxing arena in Redwood Shore!! It is just where EA is based. I thought that was a nice touch.

Go ahead and get it, just don't expect it to be an earth shattering experience.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Step Back From Ko Kings 2000, March 1, 2001
By

I've given this game another chance. my original review was a bit harsh. After spending more time playing the game and getting used to the way the new game flows, as compared to 2000, i've got a slightly different review. While the game is definetly "prettier" to look at, the boxers and the graphics lack FLUID realism and motion, which 2000 had. It's difficult to defend with the robotic movements. the boxers move slow. I find it annoying that you can hammer your opponent with regular punches and do very little damage, relying heavily on haymakers to be able to knock someone out, as fas as the haymakers go, pulling them off without getting clobbered, is difficult. The added cut men, referee counting you out, better training, and the addition of the female boxers add to the fun. Alas with below average playability and robotic boxers and movement, it takes away from the game. Once again in a boxing EA game the greats are STILL missing, get with it EA !! Where's George Foreman, Mike Tyson, Thomas the "hit man" hearns ???? I remember a snes game called Boxing Legends of the Ring, and it had Hearns in it. Where's Gerry Cooney ?? Riddick Bowe ? Buster Douglas ? EA if your gonna do another game for 2002 GO ALL THE WAY !! Okay RENT THIS FIRST !! my reccomendation ? rent this for five days play it non stop, before you decide to buy it. Knockout Kings 2000 is WAY better and a LOT more fun.
