Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

It would be difficult to imagine more thorough travel guides than the offerings in this series. Indeed, Athens contains all you could possibly want to know about the Greek capital and environs, and much, much more. The supersufficiency of information could almost be a drawback for those seeking their facts in a hurry. Every conceivable aspect of Athenian culture, geography, and history is treated in text prepared by numerous specialists as well as academicians. Numerous excellent, highly detailed maps guide the tourist-traveler through the fabled sites within and around the city, with itineraries for walking tours provided for such attractions as the Acropolis, the Agora, and the port of Piraeus. Also covered are Cape Sounion, Corinth, Delphi, and islands of the Saronic Gulf. Superb photos and schematic drawings everywhere enhance the text but sometimes suffer from being too small. Recommended for public libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Museum-quality guide !, August 14, 2006
By
Ellinas (Bay Area, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Knopf Guide: Athens and the Peloponnese (Knopf Guides) (Paperback)
I have just returned from Athens and was greeted by this beautiful just-released Knopf Guide.

It was such a pleasure to revisit those sights I miss so badly - History, culture and the sights of Greece are presented in an easy-to-read, concise format, with superb graphic presentations. One almost feels like they are viewing the museums or ancient sites referred to within.

This Guide is well-researched, fresh and definitely current !

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful Book but too much info to sift through, March 25, 2006
This review is from: Knopf Guide: Athens and the Peloponnese (Knopf Guides) (Paperback)
I thought this book was useful but there was so much information to get through. When I travel, I normally don't read up on the local plant life or different species of insects in that area first. But there are lots of pictures and overall, it's a helpful guide.
