Editorial Reviews

Review

The Washington Post says, “The map guide lets you be inconspicuous: it’s as small and light as a novella, and its flip-out maps could pass as a flyer to a cool club.”

“Make sure you never lose your way in a strange city. Each of the Knopf MapGuides captures its city’s pith in a package as small as a passport wallet…”– Real Simple

“Knopf MapGuides are handy, practical and perfect for those of us who are slightly impaired when it comes to map-reading. You don’t have to search a huge crackling sheet with a microscopic index for one of 10,000 dots on the map…The extraordinary quality of the books’ beautiful hues and heavy paper also give these $8.95 guides an evocative quality that stands apart from the glossy, garish look of most travel books.” – Marin Independent Journal

“A good, handy portable item for a quick trip” – San Francisco Chronicle

“We love Knopf’s smart new map guides.” – Travel & Leisure

I wish they made these for every city.
Kelsey
Easy to carry, easy to read and compact so you don't have to fold those miserable city maps.
Triplanner
The foldout maps for each neighbor were highly detailed with street labels.

We've just returned from Barcelona, having brought several pocket guides with us -- this one was the lightest to carry and had the best maps. The city is divided into six sections, each with short descriptions of several attractions and restaurants, and each with a fol-out map to that section. These maps were included metro stops, street names and the places listed, and were augmented by small color photographs. Attraction and restaurant listings include hours, prices and telephone numbers/ The front and back covers fold-out also and give general and metro information and some hotel listings. We found this little guide to be fairly useful, but particularly liked the maps.

Top 10 reasons to buy this guide.
10. It's small and compact and fits in your purse.
9. It's beautifully designed. Would you just look at that vintage style cover!
8. Districts of Barcelona are represented in 6 sections, making it easier to navigate the city.
7. There's an updated full color subway map in the back matter.
6. Every restaurant and cafe we tried on a whim served delicious food and didn't ever disappoint.
5. Days and hours of opening are listed on every venue listed. This is very important since Barcelona stores hold erratic business hours.
4. Basic information on day trips outside Barcelona is listed in the front matter.
3. The thumbnail size photos while not great do provide a quick impression of the venue listed.
2. All explanation are short and to the point, making it easier to read while you're on the road.
1. It's only $9.95!

That said, I recommend supplementing this pocket guide with something more substantive like Frommer's walks of Barcelona that give more detailed and poignant explanations of historical attractions, and give you an itinerary that prioritizes what you should see.

Bon voyage!

I brought 5 Barcelona books with me for the trip. This was the only one I carried around throughout my stay there. Great fold out maps and color coded to easily find your destination. It's small and compact, easily fit into a coat jacket or a purse.

During our December 2010 trip to Spain and Barcelona this book was by far the best map book we had. Totally blows away Michelin Guide and Rick Steve's Guide for Spain with map details. Those other Guides have very little city street details. It's small size fit in my back pocket or jacket vest pocket. The foldout maps for each neighbor were highly detailed with street labels. This was very useful in walking the Port Vell, El Born, El Raval and Sant Gervasi neighborhoods. Also used this guide while bike riding in La Barceloneta and the Villa Olimpica. I plan on purchasing this series of guide book for future travels. This Guide also has recommended restaurants, cafes, tapas, shopping for each of the neighborhoods.

The city and neighborhood maps are very useful for the tourist on foot. It also had great tips for the wonderful variety of public transportation offered in Barcelona. I really enjoyed the way suggested sights were divided into neighborhoods.

This is tremendously better than the large fold-out tourist maps that cover an entire city or the guide books that are thick and difficult to open to read their small maps. The saddle stitching is durable and the book easily fits in a jacket pocket. The maps for each section of the city are easy to flip open and the color makes them easy to read. The highlighting of Metro stations on all maps in addition to the having the entire Metro map inside the back cover is a great feature. The highlights and recommendations for each area are basic, but good enough if you're only visiting for a few days. I'll certainly purchase editions for other cities in my future travels.
