I had checked out a book from the local library and liked it so much I came on amazon to buy that book, Fodor's Rome's 25 Best, 6th Edition (25 Best). Amazon then recommended this book to me and after looking it over decided to give it a try.
My wife and I went on a 12 day cruise of the Med and ended that we 3 days in Rome right before Thanksgiving 2006 (Nov. 2006). This book more than paid for itself with all of the helpful reviews in it and suggestions. But the topper for me was the quality and size of the maps. We looked enough like tourists in the city, but this little book and it's fold out maps helped us look a little less so. They were more than details enough, and having suggestions on them we found a wonderful place to eat one night, it was great. If you want something that is small and compact, yet still provides great details in terms of maps of a city this is the book for you. And there is no huge map to fold and unfold as you walk around a city. This book breaks the city in to sections and based on where you are you have only a small map to easily unfold and use. I highly recommend this book.

I love this book! I recently moved to Rome without knowing much about the city, and I have used this guide almost every day to navigate the various parts of town. The maps are very easy to use - they are small and manageable. I've also been following some of the dining suggestions to find the best pizza and gelato in the city, and the recommendations have been excellent!

Handy "walking around" guide,

In Rome EVERYONE is walking around with the free maps your hotel provides, so there's no reason to buy a map. However, it IS very helpful to have a map of an area that shows the sites within it, and some restaurants and hotels, because that helps you organize what you want to see and it is tiny and lightweight, which makes it easy to carry.
This map should be seen as an adjunct to a more detailed guidebook, unless you're spending only a day or two in Rome. What I suggest is that you use the traditional guidebook to identify what you want to see and then use this to help you plan your sightseeing by day or half-day. I have used these guidebooks in a number of cities and find them useful. If the Access guides were still being published, they'd trump these, because you'd need only that guidebook. But since they're long out of print, by all means, pack one of these.

After several trips to Europe I bought the Knoph Mapguide to Paris and found it to be my favorite guide book ever. The Rome guide is the same format: concise, easy to use, and informative. I've read it and plan to use it as my travel companion next month.

I like these maps very much. I first was introduced to the one on ISTANBUL, TURKEY. This ROME edition seems equally easy to follow and yet quite comprehensive. I especially like the tips to search out certain things in each neighborhood. It fits into a jacket pocket and is neat to read over an espresso in a cafe.

I am a frequent traveler and these are the only books I will buy now. They will generally fit in a coat pocket or easily in a handbag, and are pretty inconspicuous for a map, even if you're walking down the street carrying it.
Do go to a bookstore or library to read a proper guidebook first. This has limited information on attractions and restaurants, but not enough to plan a trip. A note on Rome: Some of the smaller streets will not be on the map. This is particularly troublesome if you are trying to find a restaurant that is somewhat off the beaten path, as we were. In that case, it's probably best to call the restaurant and ask for the closest major street(s).

These books are great to carry in your purse while traveling. The maps are indispensible. I bought a book for each city we visited in Europe. We walked everywhere and never got lost. Made planning our days easier.

For its size, it was a good pocket guide. It was somewhat difficult to move between the individual section maps, but there was an overall map showing the color-coded individual sections. So, I don't know how they could have made it any better. For my use, it would have been better to have an expanded description of the tourist sites and remove the restaurants, hotels, etc. descriptions.
