Book Description

Knopf Mapguides January 18, 2005
This opening fold-out contains a general map of Shanghai to help you visualize the 6 large districts explored in this guide, plus a wealth of practical information, handy tips and detailed maps to enable you to get the swing of the city.

Discover Shanghai through 6 districts and 6 maps

Bund (Waitan)/ Nanjing Donglu
Renmin Guangchang/ Nanjing Xilu/ Zhabei
Old Town (Nanshi)
Huaihai Lu/ Fuxing Lu/ Xujiahui
Hongkou
Pudong

For each district there is a double-page of addresses (restaurants — listed in ascending order of price — cafés, bars, tearooms, music venues and stores) followed by a fold-out map for the relevant area with the essential places to see (indicated on the map by a star *). These places are by no means all that Shanghai has to offer but to us they are unmissable. The grid-referencing system (A B2) makes it easy for you to pinpoint addresses quickly on the map.

Transportation and hotels in Shanghai
The last fold-out consists of a transportation map and 4 pages of practical information that include a selection of hotels.

A thematic index lists all the sites and addresses featured in this guide.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The Washington Post says, “The map guide lets you be inconspicuous: it’s as small and light as a novella, and its flip-out maps could pass as a flyer to a cool club.”

“Make sure you never lose your way in a strange city. Each of the Knopf MapGuides captures its city’s pith in a package as small as a passport wallet…”– Real Simple

“Knopf MapGuides are handy, practical and perfect for those of us who are slightly impaired when it comes to map-reading. You don’t have to search a huge crackling sheet with a microscopic index for one of 10,000 dots on the map…The extraordinary quality of the books’ beautiful hues and heavy paper also give these $8.95 guides an evocative quality that stands apart from the glossy, garish look of most travel books.” – Marin Independent Journal

“A good, handy portable item for a quick trip” – San Francisco Chronicle

“We love Knopf’s smart new map guides.” – Travel & Leisure

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for mega cities., July 13, 2007
By
This review is from: Knopf MapGuide: Shanghai (Paperback)
Chinese cities are hard to get a handle on because they're so large, so having something set up by neighborhood really helps. This was one of several guidebooks/maps I took to China and used it a lot - without it, I was lost as to where things were relative to each other. The fact that it listed key attractions in neighborhoods was very useful. Chinese cities are WAY too large for there to be detailed maps. And the small size of this mapguide is handy.

I'm a big fan of Access city guides, which are set up by neighborhood. This was the closest I could find for China.

2.0 out of 5 stars Desperately needs an update, June 1, 2010

The compact layout of all Knopf pocket guides is convenient and attractive. The maps are easy to follow except that small interesting street names are often omitted. This edition on Shanghai is desperately needing an update. I am now living in Shanghai for 2 months now. My initial exploration of this megacity using this guide met with many frustrations. This is because so many sites listed on the outdated guide (2006 edition) have already been demolished in the constant reconstruction of this megacity. For instance, a whole street of Chinese contemporary art galleries on DongDaming Lu in the Hangkou district (as indicated by the outdated guide) have gone. They are replaced by a whole street of glitzy glass office buildings for corporates. The restaurant recommendations that I tried have been good, but again, other recommended sites need to be updated. Knopf really needs to pay attention to this if they want to continue to profit on this little attractive and useful guide for the tourists.
