4.0 out of 5 stars Weird... but good., April 21, 2003
By

This review is from: The Knot Garden (Paperback)
If you liked The Wild Road and The Golden Cat then you may or may not enjoy Gabriel King's third novel. It's a lot darker, but the main difference is that it has some human characters. It doesn't follow on from the fist two stories, although you might recognise one or two characters - I'm not giving anything away though! It follows Anna Prescott, who has swapped city life for the peace and quiet of the rural village Ashmore, only to discover that this seemingly innocent village isn't what it seems. Meanwhile, her cat Orlando inherits the title (or burden) of Dreamcatcher of Ashmore, and becomes involved in a struggle to save Ashmore's wild roads from evil.
It's a very well-written book, with an intriguing storyline and some brilliant descriptions. I would say it was a fantasy book, but nothing like the epic adventure that was The Wild Road. This book is more subtle and mysterious, but all the same it has a dramatic and exciting end.
One disappointment was that none of the characters seemed particularly likeable. Maybe I'm being unfair because I don't think it quite matched up to The Wild Road, but they mostly seemed selfish and uncaring.
Overall, though, if you're looking for a gripping, exciting book (not the kind of book you can just read on the train!) then I would thoroughly recommend that you give this a go.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a waste!!!, February 1, 2008

I kept wanting this book to amount to something so it wouldn't be a total waste of time...but I was more than disappointed. Ridiculous premise that just gets worse with explanation and length! I skipped most of the "cat talk" cuz it was beyond ridiculous!!! It's hard to believe the author is not a 20 year old girl!!!

I could go on to shallow, obvious, trite and other adjectives but I'll just start to read something worthwhile instead.
