Book Description

Xanth November 23, 2010

Wenda Woodwife has a knotty problem--her mood swings have sent her beloved husband, Prince Charming, off on Adventure. She seeks the cure from the Good Magician Humphrey, only to discover that he has a knotty problem of his own and that only Wenda Woodwife can help him.

She’ll need Companions. Luckily, in Xanth magical companions are never far away, and all roads lead to Adventure.

This 34th installment in the saga of the magical land of Xanth proves the enduring appeal of Piers Anthony’s peerless creation.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Here we go “Adventuring” in Xanth once more, meeting a horde of the familiar characters while running the gauntlet of a multitide of sins. There is a plot, in which Wenda Woodwife is deserted by her husband, Prince Charming, and needs the help of the “Good Magician Humphrey” on her quest. The next problem is Humphrey’s needing her help on a quest of his own. So off they go on an “Adventure,” the standard form any journey takes in Xanth, meeting a host of characters who sometimes help and sometimes hinder. Meanwhile, Prince Charming is in enough trouble that readers will wonder if he and Wenda will ever be reunited. Xanth remains a land of happy endings, however, and readers can expect the usual amount of enjoyment from this thirty-fourth Xanth tale. --Roland Green

Review

"This being Xanth, the adventurers find absurdities, danger, and romance but also find themselves unwittingly involved in extremely complex intrigue. Classic Xanthromancy."  --Booklist on Air Apparent

"Naturally, the quest is successful--Anthony does not trade in tragedy in his best-known series--and what is more, along the way Clio finds true love with the magician Sherlock and meets a good many of the ongoing characters in the Xanth series. …The puns for which the Xanthian corpus is famous are as numerous and outrageous as ever."  --Booklist on Currant Events

"Profusely punning his path through his 26th Xanth fantasy (Up in a Heaval), the prolific Anthony focuses on a contest between Demon Jupiter and Demon Fornax, reviving to great effect the dueling demons theme from last year's Swell Foop…. As they crisscross Xanth, they encounter many of the characters featured in Anthony's previous works. Anthony's latest offering is certain to please fans.”  --Publishers Weekly

3.0 out of 5 stars only for fans, October 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Knot Gneiss (Kindle Edition)
I'm not sure where all the 5* reviews are coming from - I've been a fan of the series for years so when I was looking for something to read on my train commute I grabbed this - maybe it is just that the pun idea is aging, but I really felt this is not a significant addition to the series - there are some good plot hooks in there but I felt as though the parts with meat got glossed over in order to get to the next gratuitous, reader-submitted pun. While I appreciate the willingnesss to build in the reader input, for me it goes over the top when it is so incidental (literally, the equivalent of watching stupid puns with no relevance to the story out the window of a bus.) It seemed like the approach was more build-up & stupid pun with a short punchline for the actual story. And the moons of Ida just weren't a concept that needed to be brought into the series, nor was making Ida the long-lost sister of a major (interesting) character (that wasn't news in this book but it continues to irritate)

I won't repeat the story as others have done that. If you are a fan of the series, it is ok, but it wouldn't be at all interesting if you don't know the series and haven't read the recent books.

So, pleasant escapism but frustrating in that there was a good story buried in there that just didn't come out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Up to the Usual Xamth Standards, January 6, 2012
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I own every one of the Xamth novels ever published in paperback, which I believe now comes to 34 books, and I've read all but the latest few more than once. "Knot Gneiss" is up to the original Xanth standards--how Piers manages to keep coming up with new ideas I'll never know, but I guess the puns readers submit are a help. I'm an author myself, so I know what kind of headaches one can encounter when trying to come up with original ideas. One thing I noticed is that Piers is including a few more adult scenes in his latest novels. That's good, especially for those of us who are about the same age as the author and enjoy books not specifically written for kids. My recommendation for those of you who have the entire series: reserve a long slot of time and read the series from beginning to end. You'll enjoy it as one enormous novel.
