Book Description

November 24, 1992 0822006413 978-0822006411 1
The original CliffsNotes study guides offer expert commentary on major themes, plots, characters, literary devices, and historical background. The latest generation of titles in this series also feature glossaries and visual elements that complement the classic, familiar format.

Piqued by a dare, Angelou wrote this first book as an exercise in autobiography as art — and succeeded. Her novel is a story of the difficulties of black women and the eventual victory of spirit that comes from being a soulful fighter.

CliffsNotes on I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings helps you explore this tale of rebirth, self-worth, and dignity. This concise supplement helps you understand the overall structure of the novel, actions and motivations of the characters, and the social and cultural perspectives of the author. Features that help you study include

  • A close look at the author's life which offers insight into her writing
  • A list of characters and their descriptions
  • Summaries and commentaries, chapter by chapter
  • Critical assessments of the novel and the television movie adaptation
  • Glossaries to help you fully understand the novel
  • Critical essays on women in the novel and Southern Fundamentalism
  • A review section that tests your knowledge, and suggested essay topics

Classic literature or modern modern-day treasure — you'll understand it all with expert information and insight from CliffsNotes study guides.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maya made me, a white woman , understand blackness, August 29, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (Cliffs Notes) (Paperback)
Miss Angelou is a wonderfully expressive writer. She tell was she feels, and offers no excuses or apologies for it. If you are white and have asked yourself "What is their problem?" (meaning black Americans), you should read this book.Call me a racist...I don't care....call me a fool...and I sit up and listen. She is a wise and wonderful lady. Once you've started to read her books, you won't be able to stop. She speaks the truth

5.0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Eye-Opener, November 24, 2001
By
This review is from: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (Cliffs Notes) (Paperback)
Dr. Angelou has a wonderful way with words. She can make you laugh, think... anything that aids you in getting into her writing. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is an excellent portrayal of what life was like for those who were black in that time. Her story may be horrible for many people to imagine, but many times, the truth needs to be published before work can be done to eliminate social injustices such as the white/black problem. Thank-you, Mrs. Angelou, for writing such an honest document, so that people for years to come can read your books, and know that we CAN help in making our world a better place. God bless.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an insight!, April 16, 2002
This review is from: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (Cliffs Notes) (Paperback)
Maya Angelou's written language is alive, and that's refreshing. There is a specific life-view from the standpoint of a black girl growing up, and it is uplifting how she meets her difficulties with confidence. Her humor in many situations made me laugh out loud. Yes, she is a gripping author, and the tidbits of wisdom shine through like rays of sunlight...
