As I type this with my purring kitty on my lap, I know that he is calm, happy and content. This knowledge, along with a lot more, is thanks to Dr. Bruce Fogle, the author. I thought I knew quite a bit about cats and their actions, but this book taught me even more! Instead of paragraph after paragraph droning on about science and character, this book is packed full of wonderful pictures. Each picture has a caption beside it explaining, in great detail, it's relevance. Of course it also has paragraphs of great information too! Many topics are covered, such as Cat Relationships, Having a Family, The Growing Kitten, The Mature Cat, and more. While this book explains cats in an easy to understand format, it also throws in some science. (Enough to make you feel smart!) I feel a lot brighter and well versed in cats, and I actually feel like I know my cat better too (sounds trite, but it's true!). Know Your Cat is the perfect name for this hard to put down book!

By the way, this is indeed an attractive coffee table book with its colorful cat pictures and tidbits of information. However, it is a good book to have on hand for the information in it.

Although it's written by a veterinarian, this isn't really a cat care book. Oh, it does have a number of cat care tips, but the focus is on understanding your cat. Naturally, the information here is in the form of generalities, and any cat owner knows that your individual cat might not follow all of those generalities! Bearing that in mind, this book's information does seem to be on target.

I do have reservations on Dr. Fogle's training tips, one in particular involving use of a mouse trap concealed under newspapers which a prized plant is on. The theory is that the cat approaching the plant with the idea of chewing its leaves will set off the trap, causing the papers to suddenly explode along with the noise of the trap. Seems to me that the cat could get a paw or tail caught in the trap.

Much of the book covers pregnancy and the raising of kittens. Again, this ia all profusely illustrated, there being pictures along with the text on every page. The text is, at times, a bit dry and impersonal, but the pictures more than make up for this shortcoming.

I do believe that you and your cat(s) will benefit from this book.

Other than that, this is an informative and useful book. Chances are that you'll read a bit at a time, and not necessarily cover to cover.

As with all DK books, this one is profusely illustrated with high-quality photographs, showing the moods, habits and personality traits of cats. These are not purebreds, but average pets, from kittens to aging adults. A great guide to understanding and caring for felines.

I found this book very helpful. It is very good at explaining in words and pictures how to read your cats body language so you can have a happier cat. I work in an animal shelter and found many of the tips to work great. The reason it only gets 4 stars is because I don't agree with some of the "punishment" tips like spraying cat with water or tapping it on the nose. Most of the sources I have found say those are the worst ways to try and change cat behavior. But the rest of the book really was great.

This book is a great book for the first time owner or for older children in a house with cats. Reading this book will give the novice a overview of how cats behave and what to expect as the cat grows to maturity. The experienced owner will find the book helpful in explaining your cats behavior to none cat owners.

A great, very readable, understandable book on cat behavior and actions. If you want to understand your cat better - this is a great book. Each category/concept has its own two-page spread with plenty of pictures and good descriptions. This is a beautiful book for the pictures alone! I recommend anything by Dr Fogle.. a great author.

This book should have never been written. This was in past about only book translated to my language (finnish) on , generally cat care.Print gives so prof. wiev , that you instantly think this person knows what he is speaking. WARNING! The result of this kind of behavioral teaching with spay bottle, tin paper trapping is fast lane to unbalansed cat. Little i knew when using this to my previous cat. Result was quite monsterous being. This kind of unsecurity in cats home should never be greated. There is so many good cat psychology books. telling exatly opposite of quides from this book. Thank you - for those OTHER authors! i have now 3 cats, all behaving nice, even "mission impossible" unsocialised wildcat, is playing and purring around happily... taming little by little. (read over 50 books on cats, behaving, psychology etc). Cat psychology is not so wierd. with love and caring, a bit outsmarting gets much better results. greate save and loving home, with many inspiring cat toys. So if you have this book, do favor to your cat - and get rid of this book. Hopefully this prewiev can safe your cats peace of mind. I recomment to poikot any book including the spray-bottle/water teaching method. DONT SPRAY WATER TO YOUR CATS. They deserve better.
