You know you've wasted money when...,

This review is from: You Know Your Child Is Gifted When...: A Beginner's Guide to Life on the Bright Side (Paperback)
When I ordered this book, I expected a tongue-in-cheek retrospective of the ups and downs of being the parent of a gifted child. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Very wrong. This book is no more than a regurgitated compilation of common lists found at every gifted site on the internet. Any parent who has come this far looking for information on parenting their gifted child has already seen every characteristic list in this book at least two or three times for free. Do not waste your money on this book.

Not Worth the Money,

This review is from: You Know Your Child Is Gifted When...: A Beginner's Guide to Life on the Bright Side (Paperback)
This book is heavy on vague lists of what to look for in children who might be gifted. It contains very few specifics and reads more like a book intended to convince parents that their children are gifted rather than a serious analysis of the extent of their skills. Not worth the money to me.

This is not the book to buy if you want tips on how to parent the gifted child. Galbraith wastes time catagorizing different types of "giftedness" and ends each section with a few tips on how to parent. I felt this book was overpriced for the information it contained.

A Delightul Gem for Parents of Young Children.,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: You Know Your Child Is Gifted When...: A Beginner's Guide to Life on the Bright Side (Paperback)
An entry level book for parents of children ages two to eight.Includes characteristics of gifted, descriptions of terms used in gifted education, perfectionism, parenting the gifted child, working with the schools, the rights of parents, etc. Has resources that include book titles, organizations and web sites.A gem that should be the first book that parents, grandparents and child care providers read when they wonder "Is this child gifted?".

I was disappointed that this book talked only about children identified as gifted when in preschool or earlier. The anecdotes and examples all refer to children less than 8, usually less than 6. It is not uncommon for a child to be identified or maybe even BECOME? gifted until later. I know several kids who weren't "certifiably" gifted until 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades, even one in the 7th grade. I was hoping for more information on identifying giftedness in these 'older' children.

A short, sweet introduction to gifted children...,

This review is from: You Know Your Child Is Gifted When...: A Beginner's Guide to Life on the Bright Side (Paperback)
This little book is a great starting point for the parents of agifted child. It describes the basic areas of giftedness, along withsome of the more unusual: creative, sensitive, passionate and more. Then it offers ways to support your gifted child in each of these areas. The book is dotted with examples of gifted kids themselves, and cute illustrations to accompany them. Meanwhile, it describes some of the most basic and most serious myths of gifted children, and tells the truths beyond these myths. You Know Your Child Is Gifted When... goes on to cover the basics of educational advocacy for your gifted child, including warning signs that parental intervention and advocacy may be needed. Then it includes a short list of great resources: books, organizations and web resources for the parents and teachers new to this exciting world of raising and educating gifted children. This is a great little book for those just getting started with their gifted children, or to explain your gifted children and how you're supporting them to your friends, relatives and their teachers.

I LOVED this book! I got it in the mail and read the first 1/3 of it in the post office parking lot. It's easy to read, has amusing anecdotes, and is full of useful information. As the parent of a highly gifted 5 y/o, I've read most of what's out there for parents of gifted children. This book is great for someone who's just embarking upon the wondrous journey of knowing your child is gifted--or for someone who loves a gifted child and yet doesn't quite know what being gifted means. I'll be giving this book as a gift to people for whom it's important to know my daughter's wants/needs for challenges and understanding, like teachers (especially those who don't have training in gifted education), relatives and others who are special to us. Thanks, Judy Galbraith and Ken Vinton for a great book!

This is a tiny book (6 x 6 inches and only 120 pages), but is filled with some excellent ideas and insights. It includes some cartoon-type drawings with exaggerated representations of what giftedness is, but are amusing nonetheless. Not a research volume -- more like the kind of book you give to your child's grandparents to help them understand why you are doing some special activities or schooling for your bright youngster. The cover does say beginner's guide -- you shouldn't expect depth.

I thought this book was excellent. An easy read, which gives you insight to your child. If you are just discovering your child's giftedness, (my son is 4, and was just recently tested) then this is the book for you. It is an introduction to your world, and done with some comic relief. If you are looking for some deeper, more specific information, perhaps you have the wrong book. If you are like myself, and have gotten concrete evidence, that your suspicions are correct about your child, and need to know what to do next, this will get you started. I truly was almost in tears during certain chapters, it was almost as if they had MET MY SON before writing this book.

My husband and I read this book before giving it to my daughter. We were both very impressed how the subject matter was handled and also by the excellent examples. My daughter has found it very helpful; her three year old daughter is very bright and she was reading before she was two. This is a good book to start with. It has helpful information on how to find the right program for your gifted child too.
