This review is from: Know Your Dog (Hardcover)
If you want to "read" your dog, get this book! It is very informative and the pictures are great. I learned a lot about my beagle's behavior (ie. submissive vs. aggressive behavior) from looking at the pictures!

Common Knowledge,
By A. Vegan (Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Know Your Dog (Hardcover)
I've been thinking about getting a dog so after reading a few reviews about this book, I decided to get it. I've read a few books by Dr. Bruce Fogle and they're all been pretty helpful, except this one. I've never owned a dog but I found the information in this book to be fairly common knowledge. I'd think that most people would know when a dog is angry and when it's happy. This is not a training or breed specific book, but it will teach you the meaning of every doggy mood and action.

Learn A New Language,

This review is from: Know Your Dog (Hardcover)
If you want to understand more about your dog and the way it communicates through body language than this is the excellent book. It is hard to find a book with such excellent photographys. Even though this book does not go into detail to explain how dogs communicate, but does give plenty examples of different behaviours, such as aggression, seeking attention, mating and so on. For first time dog owners, it will allow you to look at your dog differently and those that have had dogs, this book will answer questions of why your dog does the things it does.

I read this book not because I own a dog but to review this book for my classroom. I loved it! I have never owned a dog so I lack experience in ownership. This allows me access to practical information my students may need about dog ownership. It is a fun book to read and learn about dogs. I'm glad I bought it and recommend others to buy it too! (If they can find it.)

A standard,

I just recently found this book again on my shelf. I got this when my dog was a puppy in 1995. Now that she's almost 11, I decided to get it out to look at the section on older dogs.
This book is designed for anyone who has or has ever had a dog. It's written clearly enough that any age can appreciate it, and the pictures are also a big plus. Nearly every topic is covered, and the book can span the life of your dog from before you buy him or her to the day they die...there's that much information.

Everything about dogs,
By Magic Lemur (Somewhere in Madagascar) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Know Your Dog (Hardcover)
If you have a dog or are planning to buy a dog, this is a very good book for you. It covers everything from why dogs dig holes to their breeding and how to train them.
In the back there is also a big table depicting aggression, sociability and activity of dog breeds, which I have used to buy a dog myself. You can also assess whether your dog is sociable or not through a quiz at the back, which is a good way of assessing and training your dog better. To me this book seems very much like The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People for dogs although it was written before that and is more detailed; it is more like a self help cross body language book on dogs. The one draw back is that this book tends to go for popular species of dog with its examples and tables in the back and doesn't mention dogs like border collies, which I have However I would say it is a good investment to educate you in how to deal with dogs. I think it is as essential for dog owners as a book on women is important for wife owners! |
