Editorial Reviews

Review

Know Your Parenting Personality: How to Use the Enneagram to Become the Best Parent You Can Be is a powerful new book on parenting by author and educator Janet Levine. In this book Levine applies The Enneagram, a popular system of personality mapping, to parenting. The book is geared towards book clubs and discussion groups and includes a discussion guide.

“…An interesting concept, well presented with lots of practical advice and case studies…” (Junior, July 2003)

Review

Janet Levine's newest book is to this generation of parents what Haim Ginott's "Between Parent and Child" was to the '60s and Thomas Gordon's "Parent Effectiveness Training" was to the '70s. This book addresses people who have the most motivation to bring about change: parents. They will find effective action strategies to promote greater understanding, compassion and self-esteem for both parent and child. I highly recommend this book to all parents.
Sammylane Wirth, PH.D Family Therapist, Parent Educator

Janet Levine has written a wonderful book. She has translated and applied the material on personality typology in a manner which is cogent, accessible and engaging for both clinicians and parents. This is an extremely valuable resource for everyone who seeks to understand parent-child interaction, and will help many individuals become more empathic toward themselves and the ones they love.
Joseph G. Schaller, Psy.D. Clinical Psychologist; Director, The Postgraduate Center, and Adjunct Assistant Professor, The Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology, Widener University;Private Practice with Children and Adults

Janet Levine's revolutionary and valuable new book directs readers to specific action programs to make lasting improvements within their family dynamics. It is clearly written, helpful and empowering; a must read for all parents, would-be parents, and professionals who work with parents.
Sarah M. Drennan, Ph.D Licensed Clinical Psychologist, and psychotherapist in private practice

More About the Author

Janet Levine is an author (of four books) and a decades long freelance journalist. You can find details of her current and past work on her website http://janetlevine.com. She was born in South Africa and together with her American born husband and two sons immigrated to the United States in the early 1980s. She is a lifelong human rights activist, and a teacher in the broadest sense of the word: in the classroom she teaches and learns, when she writes she teaches and learns, and she has founded organizations that teach and where members can learn--basically her life is all about giving and taking and sharing ideas. Levine played her part in the anti-apartheid movement, is a well-published and well-reviewed author, and a fulfilled teacher. She also enjoys travel, gardening, taking photographs, hanging out...and meditating. Levine loves to connect with her readers and her blog allows her to do so.

Currently she is working on her second novel, "Conflagration: A Love Story", set in South Africa in the year 1960. The narrative is driven by the power of two burgeoning forces--the macrocosmic force of the grasping fist of apartheid tightening its grip on the throat of the South Africa people and the microcosmic force of the illicit and dangerous yet unstoppable love affair of Liv and Rosie--while the primeval land preens its beauty amid the turbulence of human passion and calls forth its true sons and daughters to sing of its beauty.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT PARENTING RESOURCE, September 2, 2003
By
GraberDC (Denville, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Know Your Parenting Personality: How to Use the Enneagram to Become the Best Parent You Can Be (Paperback)
Janet Levine is a master at translating Enneagram theory into practical application. Her previous book (The Enneagram Intelligences)on the learning and education styles based on one's enneatype is one of my favorite enneagram books. Her latest work will help all of us dealing with the greatest job in the world, parenting.

This book is short on complicated enneagram terminology and theory. It is definitely geared for a general audience. Even so, if you have studied the enneagram in depth, this is the most comprehensive treatment of parenting from an enneagrem perspective. It has a pragmatic focus on identifying your type and the issues it brings to the child rearing table. Very workable exercises and solutions are provided as well to help you grow past and from these.

I hope that Ms. Levine produces a complimentary volume dealing with raising children from their enneatype. That would be a welcome addition to any library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, quick, read., September 29, 2005
This review is from: Know Your Parenting Personality: How to Use the Enneagram to Become the Best Parent You Can Be (Paperback)
Very good book. I also enjoyed the fact that it was a fairly quick read. You take the quiz, and then you read up on which personality style you are. It had great information, and a great prespective in all. And if you decide to (as I did) you can also read up on all of the other personalities, for more insight, and information. And with being a Mom of 3, it was great that I could read it, put it down, pick it back up and read some more, and not feel "lost."

5.0 out of 5 stars A critical addition to your parenting toolkit!, March 30, 2003
This review is from: Know Your Parenting Personality: How to Use the Enneagram to Become the Best Parent You Can Be (Paperback)
There are so many wonderful parenting books that help advise and guide us to be the best parents we can be and to bring out the best in our child. However, Janet Levine's Know Your Parenting Personality offers something every parent needs...a blueprint to our personality and our children's personality and how they interact. Levine lays out a clear and highly accurate roadmap to navigating our strengths and developing our weaknesses so we can ultimately give our kids the best we have to offer without getting in our own way. For every parent who wants to connect with their children, reduce stress and be a source of life long support to their child, read this book... and keep it on your nightstand to refer to over and over again. You will benefit from the knowledge and your children will benefit for life.
